Crossover - hard to find for biamping
jji666 If the speakers have separate binding posts for low/mid-hi and any jumpers are removed then the amps will not combine. The low amp will drive the woofer via the internal low pass network and the high amp will drive mid/hi via high pass-sep...
Crossover - hard to find for biamping
If you're thinking of leaving the frequency dividing to the internal passive x-overs and using the active x-over just for level control you may not need one. If you choose tube and SS amps with the same gain (e.g. 26db) they should power the drive...
Does your system sound “better” after being away?
Yes. As much as I love my music collection, system and room, I find that listening day after day becomes less charming after 5 or 6 days. Too much of a good thing. Taking a break for a day or two seems to re-set my ears and musical appetite.
Bad experience with an electrician
OK, Fine!     How many hippies does it take to screw in a light bulb? Hippies don't screw in light bulbs. Hippies screw in dirty sleeping bags.     How do you know when the drum riser is level? When the drummer drools out of both sides of his mo...
It was 61 years ago today...
It"s always a gas being present for a cultural renaissance.
It was 61 years ago today...
I was 6 when the Beatles first played Ed Sullivan. I had older brothers and sisters. My 16 yr old sister was quite excited. I recall sensing a seismic shift. This was obviously a whole new thing from "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" In my ...
If there was only ONE album/cd/release you can listen to, over and over.............
At the moment it would be Miles Davis/Gil Evans "Miles Ahead". Complex, layered, jazzy and orchestral. It has taken many listenings for it to open up and reveal its charms. I particularly enjoy the 1997 Columbia/Legacy CD reissue as it was remixed...
Snell Type A speakers
They are wonderful speakers. A used pair could be an path to good sound for little money. I believe the woofer surrounds are foam which can rot over time so check them before purchase. Atomic HiFi and TV in Ashland Massachusetts has replacement dr...
Perception and Watts: Doubling of power
audioguy, with respect, I believe you are mis-reading things. "A 3 dB change yields a 100% increase in sound energy and just over a 23% increase in loudness." (from the article you included). 3dB is indeed a doubling of actual acoustic energy as m...
Perception and Watts: Doubling of power
How can any of us really tell what half as loud, or twice as loud is? Using music as a test signal for determining half or twice loudness is indeed difficult. Music varies in pitch and loudness and so is a moving target. The bel scale was develo...
Trios “Chapel” Live - Lloyd, Frisell, Morgan
Just gave “Dorothea’s Studio" a listen. The "distortion" on Lloyd's sax, that spitty, crackly sound is common to saxophones when played quietly.  There was a thread some years ago wondering about the same sound on "So What" from "Kind of Blue". It...
New to vinyl, where to start?
That's actually a sweet little cartridge-no need to upgrade it. Herb Reichert examined it in Stereophile and found it to be quite good for the money.  I bought one and was shocked how good it was compared to my Benz-Micro. To get the most from vin...
Doesnt resistance mean same as impedance??
It seems many of these replies may be a bit more complicated than the OP is interested in. Both resistance and impedance are the opposition to current flow. Both are measured in ohms. The difference is resistance is a function of direct current el...
Beautiful Music That Reduce You To Tears
"Who Knows Where the Time Goes" from the Fairport Convention album "Unhalfbricking. Written by Sandy Denny (when she was 19!) and sung by her. "To Lay Me Down" from the Grateful Dead album "Reckoning". I have found that the ability of a song to ...
