Great speakers for a small room
Find a demo/used NHT Xd system (there are a couple on Audiogon right now), should be ~$2k or a bit less, and since it includes a power amp you can sell your current one for an even lower net cost. The sound is, in a word, staggering. Unbelievably t...
CD format war and resultant music players
Per Txp1, "The next "audiophile" media will be vinyl. Oops, its already happening. Vinyl and vinyl playback systems are booming . . ."Well, that sure sounds nice but let's take a look at the facts (took about 30 seconds to find, by the way). Per t...
Phase Coherence or Time Alignment: Which More Imp?
One name that should not go unmentioned in this thread is John Dunlavy. He was/is a big proponent of time alignment and his speakers use a first-order crossover. If I recall correctly, John was undecided on how important phase coherence was, but t...
Why I love analog, part II
I'll second the recommendation for the Sabine Meyer recording. If I could sound like her for one day, I'd die a happy man!
Why do intelligent people deny audio differences?
Rsbeck makes an awful lot of sense, and argues his points cogently. He'll also be ignored and worse.Nothing changes
CES is almost upon us.
Probably will attend now that I'm starting to cover the audio market. Jeff, how's Amphion doing? Are you still carrying them?
Is vinyl dead ?
Anybody who reads that other site's "outside" forum knows that Sean isn't kidding. :-(
Is there a future for Redbook players?
Jvogt speaketh the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
What is pink noise?
Alcides - your pink/white noise analysis is correct, but you're off by an octave on the piano's low end. The standard 88-key piano goes down to ~28Hz, also the 440Hz A is above middle C, not below.
Overrated & Underrated
Tenniswino -The Caymus vertical tasting hasn't been scheduled yet - the wine is stored ~30 miles away, so stays out of mind most of the time.I'll also be at CES Thursday and Friday if you'd like to do some wine tasting there! Friday's pretty well ...
hearing loss from compressed music
Albert -We're really just arguing semantics here, not a big deal. Our views of digital technology are, as you say, pretty far apart. However, in the broader world - including much of the world of audio - I suspect that there is actually a great de...
Overrated & Underrated
Tenniswino - Silver Oak cabs: yawza! I'm down to one of the '85 Napa, but still have a few of the Alexander and a numer of both from '84, '86 and '87 (all bought pre-kids!). Also the Dunn, Spotswood, etc. All but the '85s should be drunk in the ne...
hearing loss from compressed music
Albertporter, I did not say that your comment was inaccurate, just quite misleading. When you say ". . . until VERY recently . . .", you are clearly implying that some sounds perceived now are not analog in nature.I'd really love to know of some e...
hearing loss from compressed music
Regardless of the storage format, what comes out of the speakers/headphones is analog (or at least it is down to quantum levels), just as much so from an MP3 as any pristine Sheffield Labs LP. Claiming that "until VERY recently, every sound percei...
Why is Double Blind Testing Controversial?
To answer the original question, DBT is controversial because there are widely divergent views of its accuracy and applicability. One group of people feels that DBTs as a test methodology are inherently incapable of demonstrating audible differenc...
