Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Fleib,It is not friction which is causing 'stylus drag' but groove modulation. Here is an excerpt from an article by Peter Moncreif published in the IARAutomodulation Distortion The turntable designer might instead try to deliberately use a ve...
Do you use variable speed on your turntable?
Yes Lew, I have done the experiment with the KAB strobe. The problem is that stylus drag is instantaneous and not consistent so whilst the KAB may waver at times.......it quickly settles back to a constant speed thus depriving one of any quantifica...
Turntable speed accuracy
If your platter is heavy, playing a record will not affect the speed. That was the first quote from Don. Needle drag does not slow down "Properly Designed" turntables! That was the second quote from Don.I guess I can agree with the second. it seems...

Do you use variable speed on your turntable?
It's very accurate, and I doubt a laser record weight is much better, just more spectacular and easier to monitor from your listening chair.Written by a man who has not understood what he has witnessed in the Timeline in action. The Kab strobe (an...
Turntable speed accuracy
Quite right Lew.It really doesn't matter if your TT is revolving at 32.4rpm or 33.3rpm (other than pitch)......as long as it it is unwavering! And that article you read was the one I posted by Peter Moncreif of the IAR. It was like a thunderbolt fo...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Hi Lew,It's not the MCs per se which are causing more stylus drag.....but any low compliance cartridge. My theory being that the low compliance does not allow the cantilever to 'bend' easily around the groove 'barrier' whereas the high compliance b...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
For the last 10 years I have been bothered by the 'distortions' I was perceiving with low compliance LOMC cartridges on heavily modulated grooves especially in the upper frequencies. When I returned to high compliance MM cartridges due to this thre...
Turntable speed accuracy
I have the Kab strobe disc and laser pointer which I have used reliably for the last two years and I have now just obtained the Sutherland Timeline laser weight. The Timeline demonstrates that the Kab strode is merely an 'approximation' of correct ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Hi Lew,The pigskin mat I purchased from Tommy at TopclassSUEDEIt is paper-thin and IMHO.....a perfect partner for the Micro Cu180 platter mat. Dear Geoch,Are you saying that because we don't fully understand the principles governing that which we ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Thuchan is correct. With the Cu180 platter mat and the Victor thin suede (pigskin) mat on top, it improves the sound over the bare copper mat.It is even better than thin felt and it doesn't need to be stuck down.A nice heavy record clamp will help ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
After much listening on a variety of arms, I believe the Clearaudio Virtuoso has the edge on the Acutex 420.In fact, there is a lot of truth to Raul's original review on this Ebony cartridge....not to mention Nandric's 'special'?The only weakness ...
Graham Phantom Supreme?
Dover,That is correct. There is no physical contact between the magnets of the Magnaglide and thus I believe the Phantom II.....in fact all the Graham arms.......are true unipivots.Cheers
SAEC 308N vs 308SX
I have the WE-308N and have never found the sound 'sterile' unless the cartridge provided that quality.I agree with Hiho about the quality of the bearings. This arm gives me enormous pleasure and along with the Micro Seiki MA-505S.......is one of t...
TW Acustic 10.5 and Graham Phantom Supreme II
What kind of optimist are you? There may be no-one on this planet who has heard this specific combination (the Phantom Supreme II has shipped just a few examples)....and IF there actually IS someone......the chances of him also reading Audiogon mak...
