The problem with absorption panels- it kills the fine details
Room treatments are not tweaks, they're meant to solve specific problems created by the listening environment.
You know when you are dealing with a BS company....
If someone says Brand A peanut butter tastes 15% better than Brand B, what does that tell you, other than a misfortunate grade school education.
Recapping an ARC LS-5 mkiii
Slim to zero chance ARC will work on the unit if it has obsolete semiconductors (they can't take the chance they'll accidentally damage an irreplaceable good one while in their care).  The Rel Caps are top quality films which ARC uses as bypasses...
I need some help with power in my home!
You really should call an electrician. I'll bet a nickel it's one of two things: the service ground lost integrity; or... if you have aluminum wiring, the lugs at the panel and breakers need to be deoxidized and re-tightened.
Bypassing Caps - what is it really about?
Bypass capacitors in crossover circuits are, in my opinion, useless. The reason bypass capacitors are used is to lower the overall impedance at frequencies where the equivalent inductance of capacitors has the dominant impedance, which is above th...
diffuser or absorption panels, which would you choose?
That’s the wrong approach. You first have to identify the problem before implementing the solution. The first step should be an analysis of the listening room. Acoustic companies offer that service. Best to contact them directly.
Quad panel outlet - can I do one circuit on this?
Yes, you can do it. Wiring one quadplex outlet on one branch circuit is the same as two duplexes on one branch circuit. The quad give you the convenience of plugging everything at one location and, more importantly, at one ground point. A dedicat...
Why don't higher end amplifiers come with a separate power chassis?
A big reason is warranty servicing. Connection points are a leading cause of failure due to the mechanical stresses on the coupling and the connecting and reconnecting cycles, so there has to be a large benefit to cost ratio (and with a power amp ...
Isolation transformers output voltage higher than wall
What are you measuring with? There could be as much as a five to six volt difference between true rms multimeters and averaging multimeters when measuring wall voltage. All multimeters are accurate with a clean sinewave power but not with wall vol...
What are your top three favorite classical compositions?
Schubert Symphony 9  Beethoven Violin Sonata No. 5 Mahler Symphony 9
Insulation between floors - how affective?
Check first that this isn't a routine maintenance issue. Noise from circulating water could be air in the baseboard piping. You'll need to bleed and fill. Rumbling noise from a boiler could be a restriction in the chimney or flue, caused by soot (...
Still another question about biasing tube amps
Both the tube type and the amplifier topology (Class A or A/B). To keep it simple: it's maximizing power, minimizing distortion and maximizing tube life. From there the bias is a function of the plate voltage and impedance of the OPT primary. Whe...
Driver Testing - reduced output
Use a multi-meter to measure the resistance across the speaker terminals. Normally, the resistance should measure around 3 to 6 ohms. If both measure exactly the same in this range, it's probably not the crossover and instead a driver issue.
I have NOVA V's and I am not happy
Could also be the Sonus Fabers are reproducing the recording with all its warts. I have the same issue with my Thiel 3.6’s. On great recordings they are unbeatable; on poor recordings the performance better be great for me to tolerate. If you’re ...
Custom Tuning Conspiracy
The reason such a speaker company doesn’t exist is because there is no business plan or marketing for such a product. Or in plainspeak: it won’t make money. The main reason it won’t is because the consumer does not know a Thiel-Small parameter fr...
