Battle of the Older DAC
I still use an old Weiss DAC202 and i am perfectly happy with it. The only reason to change it will be to get a different sound, otherwise I have no desire to do so.
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
@ozzy Have a look at the following two threads, the first one is massive and has been going on for years https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/24002-optical-network-configurations/page/143/#comments https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/69...
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
@jimboman Perhaps an Etherregen or an Sonore optical Module? How are you connected to the Cisco 2960? What is your network structure?
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
@jimboman James, yes the Finisar modules seem to be one of the most popular. Get LC modules perhaps something like FTLF1318P3BTL or if you like to try AOC (Active Optical Cable) then the Cisco SFP-10G-AOC5M or similar, but please do check compatib...
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
@jimboman  Sorry for the late reply. The thread that @bill_k mentioned is the correct one. It is a good one but it can be confusing as there are conflicting information sometimes. There is also a spin off thread on the same site about DACs (not D...
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
Btw SFP is very old technology in networks, only in audio is relatively new.
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
@maxwave There is a lot of confusion between SFP and SFP+. For audio there is absolutely no need for SFP+, the only thing that SFP+ MAY help is the extremely tight jitter specification of the protocol. There is no conclusion that SFP+ is better th...
Stack Audio-SmoothLAN Network Filter- WOW!
Unfortunately not all SFPs work with all switches/converters. You should adhere to the recommended list of SFPs of the switch manufacturers. Cisco's typically require the SFP (Eprom) to be programmed so that the switch reads it. There is a huge th...
why expensive streamers
As @cleeds said most streaming services use TCP/IP protocol which delivers bit perfect data/files. Now why streamers sound different (if they do) is another story.
Importance of clocking
@lalitk Could you explain why the accuracy of the clock (which is defined by the long term stability in ppm) is as important? Genuine question.  For example the most accurate clock that I know of is cesium atomic clock which is approximately 1 -  ...
Importance of clocking
@antigrunge2 In your discussions with @nigeltheflash you are both  referring to clock accuracy, I was merely pointing out that in our hobby the clock accuracy is not the most critical parameter. That's all.
Importance of clocking
Guys, it all depends what is understood by the term 'clock accuracy'. For example rubidium clocks have very poor short term stability, they jitter by design. This makes them totally unsuitable for a short term time base reference. Their big usag...
Importance of clocking
@lalitk No problems, thanks for clarifying. I love it that people are so passionate about this hobby over here. In my engineering mind an external clock in the home environment could cause more trouble ie introduce jitter, impedance mismatch, et...
Importance of clocking
@antigrunge2  I said I am out of this thread but I will answer you. In my case I have an older DAC that is still excellent and I am reluctant to change it but it doesn't have USB i/f. therefore I am looking for AES or SPDIF i/fs. You say USB is ...
Importance of clocking
@antigrunge2 I apologize for taking over your thread.  It seems that I am causing few disputes that  I didn't mean to. @lalitk  Although I rarely post over here I have read quite a few of your views and I respect your views and experience. Hav...
