AAC or AppleLossless
I have 1,500 CD's ripped with Apple Lossless. They are stored on three external firewire drives hooked up to an Apple iBook, which runs over USB to an M-Audio Audiophile USB and then an Audio Research DAC5 w/jitter correction. I have an Airport Ex...
Home theater center channel decision to make.
In home theater, the center channel becomes the most important channel in the room. That's where the dialog and most of the foreground action is played, and it's a lot of the ambience that gets pushed into the other speakers. If you try to save mo...
Linn Classik Movie versus Linn Classik Movie DI
They're both already nearly has-beens with the exclusion of a DVI/HDMI output jack. Like Bose, Linn charges a lot for their all in one "design" that is significantly inferior to a majority of the alternatives.Moving from component to DVI is as big...
Any views on the new SFDomus Grand Piano?
The last SF Grand Piano I heard was so dire that it nearly made me forget about ever listening to a Sonus Faber speaker again. Among the worst (as in most sloppy) bass/midbass I've ever heard in a speaker. It was all about the imaging and nothing ...
Totem Hawks
When I first got them I was using an Exposure 3010 integrated amp (100 WPC) and Chord Odyssey Biwire. I've since changed over to an Audio Research VS110 and am still using the Odyssey as it is an excellent match.
Totem "Hawk" vs Totem "Arro" speakers
I have the Hawks paired with the Totem Lighning subwoofer and it is a truly amazing combination. Turn off the sub and you notice the difference, but the Hawks still hold their own in the bottom end - amazingly so for a "small" speaker.I can see ho...
Clicking noise with M-Audio Audiophile USB
Change the buffer size to the largest possible - that's usually the problem. I'm running one of these in my system with a little Apple iBook G4 1GHz and getting NO dropouts whatsoever. I had it hooked up to a Power Mac G4-400 before, and there wer...
Attn Vinyl lovers - what CD Player do you use?
Apple iBook into Audio Research DAC5 sounds pretty damn close to my VPI Scout into Audio Research PH3 phono stage...
Best compression format for PC Jukebox
Apple Lossless is not the same as AAC. Apple Lossless really is identical on playback and compresses files to somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 original size. AAC is an excellent variable bitrate compression algorithm that can compress files down to 1...
VPI Scout Placement
I have mine on and acrylic shelf of a Quadraspire Q4 with a Symposium Svelte shelf directly underneath. On a wood floor with carpet it sounds great, and no vibration from footsteps makes it through.
Airport Express compared to High End Transport.
Well, I've hooked up the ARC DAC-5 and it's very different to the Musical Fidelity A3.24. It is far more detailed in every respect, but it is definitely not as warm sounding. In the end, it drove me to change my preamp to an ARC SP16L and at that ...
Airport Express compared to High End Transport.
Actually, I'm now using a USB interface to link them together as the AE inserted a delay in when starting playback. Very annoying. Also, sorry for any misunderstandings in my original post - the 4-second buffer is neccesary to bring the DAC64 up to...
Airport Express compared to High End Transport.
I've compared this using a Chord Blu Transport and Airport Express into a Chord DAC64. Without the buffer (i.e. jitter reduction) circuitry turned on, the transport had a deeper, richer sound. Engaged the buffer up to 4 seconds and you'd be hard p...
Music from hard drive better than CD?
To address your question about toslink vs. coaxial: they both transmit the same spdif standard information so it's a matter of preference and what your equipment has. Some say that optical is more prone to jitter, but with jitter correction circui...
Music from hard drive better than CD?
Marco, for someone who's learning you've got a pretty good grasp of this! What you're talking about here is also known as jitter. Here are a few articles that explain what's going on:http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Apr03/articles/digitalclocking.as...
