Any opinions on John McLaughlins last album?
I find the playing and composition on Floating Point to be more cerebral than passionate. Though the musicians are excellent, the band lacks a second strong personality to push him (think Jan Hammer on early Mahavishnu or Larry Coryell on Spaces)....
Should I be worried if buying a 5-6 year old CDP?
Call or email Classe to confirm availability of service if needed. If you get a good answer then go for the Classe.
Wadia 9
I don't think it ever says "audio mode" or "video mode" If it says "time base corrected" then the input buffer, which hold a second or so of audio, is engaged. This helps reduce jitter since the dac can clock out from the buffer independently of t...
Wadia 9
If the display says "Time Base Corrected" then you're in audio mode.
Distortion on piano recordings? Advice appreciated
The Halcro outputs over 300 watts into 4 ohms. Your speakers are rated 90 db sensitive with a 6 ohm nominal and 3.8 ohm minimum impedance. Things look pretty good on the power amp/speaker side of things. You might be overdriving the input to your C...
What to do with bad recorded CDs
If the music is good you listen through the imperfections. Great performance trumps great great sonics.
BNC or Coax?
kyomi_audio:SPDIF (Sony Philips Digital InterFace if I recall) is the protocol transmitted across the cable, and is used whether the coaxial cable is terminated by RCA or BNC connectors. The SPDIF protocol includes left and right channel audio data...
Mahavishnu Orchestra fans...?
Mnnc:You could try McLaughlin's 2008 release Floating Point. Fusion music recorded in India with Indian musicians. There's also Chick Corea's fusion efforts, both solo and with Return To Forever and Elektric Band. His catalog is huge, but some per...
Mahavishnu Orchestra fans...?
Got to agree with Siliab. Also try The Lost Trident Sessions to hear studio versions of some of the tunes on the live album Between Nothingness and Eternity. The original band consisted of John Mclaughlin, Jan Hammer (keyboards), Jerry Goodman (vio...
Looking for a CDP from a company that'll be around
It's not just about long term viability of the company. It's also about who has a track record of orphaning older product. In that light most companies have issues. For example:Wadia - try getting service on older gear, particularly transports. So...
2 systems with 1 set of speakers - safe?
If you keep the jumpers between LF aand HF terminals then the second part of my post above applies:"Further, don't try to connect both amps to the same speaker terminals at the same time. Each amp sees the speaker impedance in parallel with the im...
2 systems with 1 set of speakers - safe?
You would only run half of each speaker at a time, depending on which system was up. It won't sound good.Further, don't try to connect both amps to the same speaker terminals at the same time. Each amp sees the speaker impedance in parallel with t...
Opinion on Nakamichi azimuth tape decks please
My memory matches Ktrogers'. The Dragon was unique in that one channel(left if I remember correctly) of the playback head fit two pole piece sub assemblies with independent coils and gaps into the space normally occupied by one pole piece. Since b...
Opinion on Nakamichi azimuth tape decks please
Ditto 80stech's recommendation. The Dragon is the only cassette deck that automatically aligns the playback head to the azimuth of the tape being played - on the fly. Since 1/60 degree azimuth error is enough to deaden the treble response of a cas...
Which Ahmad Jamal Recordings?
You can't go wrong with any of his recordings. Try Rossiter Road for nice late night ballads.
