When to replace old drivers? roberjerman & cd318, thanks for the encouragement to leave well enough alone. I wouldn't trust myself to iron the whizzer, but getting a backup pair of Fostex is an appealing idea, DeKay... looking around, the 166e and more recent 166en are in...

Your most indispensable "tweak"? For me, the earliest and cheapest was adding a dedicated line (took one afternoon, less than $100). The most recent, and maybe best, was Krissy's boxes from former PPT: game changing. In between, early-1960 6085 and 7062 tubes (in place of 12ATx a...
What's the deal with Vintage Tube Service? I waited 6 weeks for 7062s from Andy but he warned me he was behind. They arrived and were wonderful 1962s at a fair price. Brent Jesse was also excellent and quick. Would recommend both.
What have you been working on in 2020? Like lots of others I rekindled one of my oldest but dormant loves this year:--got a cheap turntable (shout out to my buddy, Chris, for pushing me): this began it all in January--realized my AVA dynamo pas III pre-amp phono stage was gone, got AVA...

Are MULLARD NOS EL34s and LTA ZOTL40 REF worth the price of admission? The nice thing about LTA is that, in that amp, those tubes should last you a life time... I have the ZOTL10 not the 40, but upgraded to vintage 6085s and 7062 in place of the 12AU & AT Xs in the line stage (from the two suppliers mentioned abo...

Basic Digital Audio Setup Advice The Roon/Nucleus solution looks appealing; I agree wireless options and headless Mac minis are undependable. One cheap solution: a long toslink cable to your MacBook if it's one that still has the optical out, or to a HMDI splitter if it's a new M...
Advice on replacement of Stereo-70 (for Cain& Cain Abbys) There was a loud pop, then loss of power and strong smell of burning following. The week prior one of the EL34s started overheating--something that has happened before (I believe it's a known problem with this model). I was trying to get the last ... |
