iPod directly into amp
I say do NOT use the headphone output of the ipod- it is already amplified to drive headphones - re-amplifying it just ain't right. Will be distorted - not enough signal strength - you'll have to crank everything WAY up (as scpetscott alluded to)....
floating ground on ICs?
I stand corrected - I was refering to floating SHIELD not ground - so there is not really a safety issue. any comments on the sound? I don't think too many manufactures do their ICs this way, do they?
do burnt CD copys sound as good as originals?
Could sound better or worse depending on the relative quality of the two physical discs - but chances are you will not hear much difference - unless one disc is poorly made, scratched, off-center, warped, etc. Such discs would create higher error ...
Unique Guitarist Andy Mckee Found on YouTube
Thanks for sharing - I checked out several of their videos - not sure which CD to buy first! His label candyrat.com also has Alan Holdsworth, Michael Manring, Eric Johnson...(I never heard of the label until justnow - good marketing via youtube...)
Greek Audiophile - Documentary Video
thanks for posting - this is a fascinating documentary - one of the only films I've ever seen (OK the only one) that introduces the audiophile hobby to the lay person. Very interesting - I urge everyone on audiogon to watch it - and share with you...
iPod volume versus laptop volume
I beleive your problem is that you are using the wrong output connection. Most ipod users use the HEADPHONE out (miniplug) which is totally wrong in my opinion. You will suffer a large loss in volume and possibly clarity. The headphone out is alre...
Bill Evans - Village Vanguard Question
Wikipedia says "Sunday at the Village Vanguard, and Waltz for Debby (all recorded in 1961)... albums are live recordings, both drawn from the same recording date. In 2005, the full sets were collected on the three-CD set The Complete Village Vangu...
Home made cable lifters.
I recently noticed that my cables were laying side by side with my cable TV cable running on the floor behind my entertainment system. To life the speaker cables off the floor I used plastic cable ties which I stapled to the back of my cabinet. Th...
Best $200 speaker cables for overall performance?

Best $200 speaker cables for overall performance?
I was lucky enough to find a used pair of Alphacore MI2's online for under $200 - sound great so far. I'm noticing depth and decay that was missing before. (Decay is a good thing to my ears...) I'm also noticing some sibilance which I think might ...
Low volume bookshelf spkrs that go from 20 to 20k?
Two speaker makes come to mind which specifically seem to address the issue of constant sound quality acorss the volume spectrum - ie, they sound good at low, med or high volumes. Revel and Joseph audio - both make monitors that can be had in this...
How many pair of speakers do you own?
Update: Added one pair since last post of 2 weeks ago:vintage Bolivar Model 18s - found in the neighbor's "free takeaway" pile. Missing a one woofer and one grill. Weigh a ton - apparently were well respected in their day. These would be great for...
Which Jazz Albums are similar to Kind of Blue
This album is totally unique in jazz for a couple of reasons - it was largely improvised almost on the spot - it does not contain a bunch of well worn jazz stardards that started as pop standards. Its very "modal" - long solos within a specific ch...
The proverbial "giant killer"
I have no comments about this particular company but in general I continue to hear a number of problems with piracy and stealing of intellectual property when dealing with chinese electronics makers. I spoke to the head of a well known speaker mak...
Anti-cables alternatives
I spent quite some time looking for magnet wire and did not find a source that met my criteria. Since this wire is not normally marketed to audiophiles, the sellers are often not aware of some of the basic design features.I want an "annealed" wire...
