Cartridges - what have you owned and your opinion
Grado Green: Muffled. The midrange voice, though, sounds very human but as if coming through a screen door.Denon DL-110/160: Dynamic, exciting, like the Mummers. Lacking internal insight. Ortofon MC5: Smooth and detailed but no soul.Pickering TLS-...

idler wheel vs direct drive technics impressions
I had a small evolution from Rega belt drive to Thorens idler then to a Technics DD. I think the Thorens had more drive and impact than the Technics. The weak link in the idler is linkage and Lenco having more linkage than the other idlers wold fa...

Panzerholz /w colorations? But I like those colors.Although I think I would go for a slate body for the Denon DL-103 if one of those ever emerges. .

Should I try the Cambridge Audio 640p?
I got one of those heavily modified Cambridge 640p's as well. It really breathes. Someone on this site is selling one for ~$600 if you just need to spend the money, else you can mod it yourself.
Soundsmith retips
I have a retipped 103 that does have a difference in presentation. Faster, much faster and much more detailed. The tone though is similar to what it was previously.AT first it was a shock. But I have grown to love it. Big difference between a coni...
Herbie's mat with NAD 533

Herbie's mat with NAD 533
I used a DIY spotmat on each table and like it very much. For help with that go here: the Analog DeptI recently bought a funk firm Achromat which beat the spotmat by a few points but that mat was about $100. Spotmat cost about $5 to make. You could...
Herbie's mat with NAD 533
While Narrod has a good point below I ignored advice like that when upgrading my NAD. I got rid of all the wow issues and the glass platter that Ekobesky suggest went a long way to help in that direction.Have a look ... http://forum.audiogon.com/c...

Best cartridge for modded Technics 1200
Tvad, I thought you meanty you were using the Technics jig. That poor molded thing. I am willing to humble down and try setting up that 160 again. I may gain something by trying it .... but I doubt it. ;-)Johnnyb53, I know that the Technics likes ...
Best cartridge for modded Technics 1200
st up on the 160. I don't know. I've had this issue with this cart across two different tables. It really shows up in comparison to the other cartridges. On it's own I wouldn't have a big deal about it. It's not a killer amount of sibilance, I sup...
