"Somethin Else" has never been a favorite record. Being a Cannonball junkie, I have owned this record for many years and have always had mixed feelings about it; it should be great, but comes up short of me. I agree with Rok's overall take. Clearl...

****I.E. the song HAS TO BE about vermont only when you sing the words. Otherwise it's just a very nice tune in the category of Autumn Leaves etc..... that Jazz guys like to improvise over.****Perhaps. But, many great improvisers will tell you tha...
What is a really good sounding low volume system??
****"I would heed Atmasphere's advice." What advice, to buy his amps.****I believe his primary advice was about speakers, no?****You just described all speakers to some degree. However, it depends a lot on how you tune your system. ****Uhh, maybe....

Orpheus, my next music contribution was going to be Ella doing Billie's Bounce. I completely agree with your comments about the appropriateness of scatting some times and not others, and this relates in key ways to the earlier discussion about Moo...

Rok, at first I was confused by your post. ****I feel you and The Frogman might be putting too much emphasis on the name of the tune. I don't think of Vermont at all.****Huh!? The tune IS about Vermont. You can't remove the lyrics from the equatio...

****BTW, there are much worst places to be musically, than a Baptist church. Some good stuff there.****GREAT stuff there. That was not the point.Cheers.

I disagree re Magnepans for this situation. While the comments about their bass propagation characteristics are true, they are NOT good low-level speakers; they like to played at medium-high levels to sound fully fleshed out and to not sound very ...

Classic case of "different strokes for different folks". To me, there is no comparison between the Johnny Smith and the Houston Person versions of Moonlight In Vermont. The Smith is perfect in it's restraint and simplicity and in the soloists's ab...

One of the most unique sounds in jazz, Toot's Thielemans' playing is incredible on this recording. One of leader Bill Evans' least talked about records, but definitely one to have.http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iOrFAxdiCnw

Orpheus10, I loved the Johnny Smith cut. What a beautiful player! Amazingly relaxed, but very deliberate and very soulful with a gorgeous sound. His feel is reminescent of Dexter Gordon's ballad playing; behind the beat but always secure and confi...

Rok, excellent and very honest post! First of all, thank you for your service. ****You get used to blunt, straight talk. No tap dancing or sugar coating. Thin skins don't survive. I have no modesty, and I cannot be offended.****I respect that; and...

Rok, c'mon now. With all due respect, you have a way of skirting the issues. What on earth does the fact that the discussion, at one point, veered into the area of the influences on jazz other than the African one have to do with anything? How doe...

I think that it is importantly to stay on focus in these discussions. I said nothing about "formal" training being a prerequisite for anything. To understand what "form" is in a tune, and to be able to explain the rudiments of improvisation is som...

*****These folks are as far away from understanding music theory on your level, as a person can get. But they do indeed get the visceral part. To me it says, HOME.*****You would be surprised. What I described above is as rudimentary as one can get...

Learsfool, your description is excellent; no need for qualifiers. I would contribute to it only by approaching it from a somewhat different angle. There is no possible way to exaggerate the level of skill possessed by an excellent jazz musician. Th...
