O-10, thanks for the Shadowfax link. I like it; it's not the kind of thing that I would go out of my way to listen to, but I like it. I am not a big fan of music with that "New Age/World Music" vibe; just a personal preference. It's a pretty melod...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Dover, I agree completely with your comments. Personally, I think it's an unfortunate state of affairs. A few thoughts re some other recent comments:- I don't understand the notion that because absolute fidelity is not attainable (it isn't) we sho...
Tony Bennett
A great story!
Tony Bennett
The "Bennett vs Sinatra debate" is one of those pointless exercises that will never have a clear winner. ****Bennett is just not everyone's cup of tea****Funny, I always felt that way about Sinatra. Bennett is one of those singers that has that ha...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Well, at least you are not saying "mute" as my dear wife insists on saying :-). But, while I agree that "personal taste rules the day", the concept as an analogy is flawed. True, guitar players choose an amp/speaker based on its tonal colorations ...
VPI bearing oil/grease?
Slaw, thanks for the clarification. Earlier you said that you agreed that the sound was leaner with oil vs lithium grease. I also noticed less-stable pitch with the grease; the main reason that I stopped using the grease. You mention that the DuPo...
How does one "Get lost in the music"?
Excellent post, Noromance! My feelings exactly. And to hopefully get the ball rolling (and appropriately titled):http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cfmiRnPjLCA

In case anyone is interested. As I said before, this features some of Lew's very best work. Definitely worth owning. And sealed!http://www.ebay.com/itm/FREDDIE-HUBBARD-SWEET-RETURN-SEALED-ALBUM-/390675478669?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item5af612b88d

Orpheus10, you could not be more correct; Lew Tabackin is most certainly an underrated player. Lew has been one of the heroes of the NY scene for a long time and I know him personally, having recently been part of a project that recreated Henry Ma...

Genius! http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ9El7k4mNoRouse sounds amazing! And no, one can't have too much Monk."Misterioso" is a great record. Griffin is fabulous, and one of my favorite tenor players. Still, there's something about the way that Rouse...
It was 20 years ago today. . What was your system?
- Maggie MG3A's (very heavily modified). Still have them sitting in a closet waiting to find the time to repair the midrange panels.- Moscode 600- Counterpoint 5.1- VPI HW19 MK2- ET2 (still use it)- Monster, Grado, ??? cartridges- Straightwire cab...

I have no direct experience with the 2.5, but my understanding is that the larger diameter spindle also has a tighter gap between it and the manifold's interior creating a stiffer bearing. Chris can give you a much better description.
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
****Type casting is a no-no as there are always exceptions to the rule: long haired rockers who always use 11; studious geeks who defer to exactitude; free thinkers who tend to experiment. **** - NonoiseThat was going to be, essentially, my first ...

As Chris says, it's difficult to tell the 2 spindle from the 2.5; but not impossible. I can usually tell when it's a 2.5. Look at the diameter of the spindle in relation to the diameter of the arm wand. In photos, the 2 spindle usually looks to be...
