Songs you use when auditioning gear Lots of great recommendations! I'll be buying some new music. Janis Ian "Breaking Silence" cut This House. Her almost whispered vocals should be easy to understand over the great bass line. And it's a good song. Have fun!
Annoying newbie CD/SACD player question I feed dsd over hdmi from a Sony 1100es to my Moon 390, but you're right: you can't output the sacd layer without a breakout box. If you want to hear the sacd layer you will need to rely on the player's internal dac so that part is very important....
Best single volume guide to classical music My favorite addition to the many good and worth recommendations so far: "The Life and Death of Classical Music featuring the 100 Best and 20 Worst Recordings Ever Made" by Norman Lebrecht, Anchor Books, 2007 Eccentric, personal, knowledgeable, c...
Starting a Classical Vinyl Music Collection A reasonably priced record cleaner is your first step. I have a VPI 16.5, but you don’t have to start there. The Spin-Clean is a good starting place, next up the line the Record Doctor V. And then start shopping used. (But stay away from RCA after...
There is none out there...... Hifi sales people think you should spend more? Will wonders never cease... I have 2 Bluesound Nodes and they work very well, sound great and the app is nonpareil. Try it first, at least, to see what you think. BTW, I use a Simaudio Moon 390 in m...
Anthem STR pre and power amplifier Congratulations. Good company and good stuff. My MXR 720 has been very reliable and still serves me well in my TV room. And ARC is fully customizable when you dig in and use a laptop. Good luck!
SACD is VERY confusing +1 on the PS Audio explanation. I use the hdmi from a Sony BluRay player (x1000es) into a Moon 390 and it decodes at DSD (when available) and sounds pretty swell. (You have to fiddle a bit with the x1000) But... how many DACs, let alone preamps...

At what price is one considered an Audiophile. Not how much, but how you spend. But it can get expensive. I've spent a lot, and I have a friend who spent ten times a much, and you know what? His system sounds WAY better than mine, I mean, no comparison. Let's not be foolish. Do what makes ...
new to streaming- help! Shoot an email to the university IT department about what you're trying to do. They might have some answers. If you can stream Tidal on your Mac you should be able to get it to work on your Node X, which is an excellent choice, btw. The BluOS app ...
Hiatus Thanks. I've gone through the same thing. Unfortunately, several times! But you are spot on. A good reminder.
LP Thickness/Taper Theo has it. LPs were thicker at the edge and at the label so the lps didn't scratch each other when they dropped from a changer onto the spinning disc below. I had a Garrard SL95, Dual 1219 and a trusty Benjamin Miracord 50H. Amazing machines. A...
MM Phono Stages With Greater Than 40 dB of Gain? Moon 110LPv2 Up to 66db gain both mc and mm. I have the same circuit in a Moon 390 and I like it. Worth a look.
Really Long XLR Consider Blue Jeans Cable. They will run you about $250 for the pair. I've used Blue Jeans interconnects, speaker cable and XLRs. The quality of construction is first rate. (Ultimately I replace the speaker cables with Kimber 12tc) I run a BJC B...
Anybody heard of Falcon Acoustics? Irving M. Fried (IMF), an American by the way, will certainly live forever through his brilliant designs for transmission line speakers that are still in production (somewhere) after almost 70 years. The new IMF 200 looks like it still uses Falcon... |
