Feelings on Napster?
This is in response to Issabre's comment "Thus, with the demise of Napster, it's not the loss of free music that I lament so much as the further empowering of corporate domination of music, art, films..etc." It is not a matter of "empowerment." IM...
How Good are the Analysis Plus speaker c
This isn't so much going to be a rave about the AP Oval 9s as much as a set of observations. Since my experience with owning high-end audio gear is limited I wasn't going to clock in here, but DennyD's comments sparked some remembrances that might...
Feelings on Napster?
I only have one thing to say to Mr_Gridlock: Well stated. You can ghost write for me anytime. To everyone else: Yeah, what he said!
Feelings on Napster?
Like the "preview" systems in some record shops Napster and similar services provide a welcome opportunity to try new music and, in turn, they might even drive sales of some works. That's a good thing, especially for new artists and those in non-m...
Recommendations: poor college kid; NAD?
At the risk of coming across as pretentious, you'd get better answers if you post this question in the 'Home Theater' discussion area. There's a lot of spill over, but most of the readers of this forum are hardcore two-channel types. Of course, no...
UPS Question/Problem
Good advice so far. Here's a little more info: it is the seller who has a contract with UPS, hence he is the one who has an insurance claim. It doesn't matter that the buyer agreed to pay the shipping charges; that does not make him a party to the...
BEST USED SS AMP FOR 1.6QR
Having recently auditioned the Maggies with both the Bryston 3B-ST and 4B-ST I have no problem recommending either amp. Either one in conjunction with the 1.6's makes for a very complimentary combination.
Source of Brightness
After recently changing tubes in my DAC there was a sudden increase in shrillness and glare. Of course, my first inclination was to blame the new tubes even though they were supposed to be an upgrade. Turned out the culprit *was* the tube change. ...
how do I retube?
Well, at the risk of spreading false information, bcowen, the reason for not touching tubes bare-handed is supposed to be related to the residual oils creating hot spots on the glass which in turn lead to out-gassing and a subsequent shorter tube ...
Sealed vs Vented enclosures
While admittedly limited to mostly "full range" speakers in the below $5K range, my experience is that sealed enclosures provide tighter, more natural bass than their reflex or ported counterparts. Unless bass is very tight and *right there* it qu...
Best CD Player under $1000
The original post didn't specify whether used was OK or not. I recently bought a used CAL Alpha DAC/Delta transport in cherry shape for under $1,000 and am very happy with it. I see these listed from time to time on Audiogon.
Question on tube noises
The DAC was bought second hand and appears to have the original tubes. It was already in the plan to replace the DAC's tubes soon, not to mention it's a cheap undertaking even with good NOS' (they're 12AX7s). There's a local audiophile shop that s...
What have YOU got?
This system is still pretty new to me (it's my first "high end" set up). There's some odd/missing pieces and it's still a work in progress (aren't they all, though?): McCormack DNA-1 (Revision B upgrade) amp Sonic Frontier Line 1 pre-amp CAL Alpha...
Question on tube noises
Allow me to answer my own question. A tube in the DAC went out last night. It was apparently the cause of the popping and crackling. In fact, that is all it does now...
2 channel high end disscussion
It's good to see there is interest in maintaining a high-end 2-channel discussion area. As someone fairly new to the high-end audio world I've found this site to be extremely helpful for locating equipment, learning about room setup, getting input...
