Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Another week rolls by and no progress.  Maybe I'll hook up with my Tech later today.  One of the problems with coupling a mat - do you want a "permanent" solution like a Goldmund mat, or maybe introduce another material like copper, which might al...
Need New MM Cartridge Recommendation
Chakster,**For some reason the original technics stylus was much better to my ears than new jico sas.**You're comparing a pipe (tube) cantilever to a solid rod - no comparison.  My Genesis 1000 has a boron tube and the cart was retipped by Soundsm...
OK...I've ditched my mono cartridge
Pryso, This has been beaten to the ground on multiple threads and of course viability depends on a record collection. If someone has very good stereo carts and a collection of mono reissues, they will get performance beyond that of a stereo cart a...
Denon DP-1200 turntable
Correction - I think the cart was a 103d, the high compliance version.
Adding mass to the Zeta counterweight
An underhung (as it were) counterweight lowers the center of gravity and gives a mechanical advantage to a static balanced system, in the vertical plane. Adding mass to the horizontal bearings has no consequence on VTF and can provide an extra mea...
Denon DP-1200 turntable
I have a Denon 1250 w/Unitrac and came with a DL103r.  The table is servo, but not quartz controlled. Interesting comparison there.  Brace the cabinet and it performs much better.
Adding mass to the Zeta counterweight
Adding mass to the counterweight reduces effective mass. In this case getting the weight as close to the pivot as possible will minimize moment (MOI) and give better transient response, tracking.  Nice arm. Regards,
Need New MM Cartridge Recommendation
How can someone evaluate a MM phono cartridge when they're stuck at 100Kohm load, then add capacitance to roll off the extreme high end? Some 4-ch carts were designed for 100K, but the ignorance level is great regarding specific loading recommenda...
Need New MM Cartridge Recommendation
There is no single cartridge which is best.  It doesn't matter which sounds like live music on someone else's system, it's going on your system and you have to live with it.  I think it would be more helpful to describe impressions - the sound of ...
OK...I've ditched my mono cartridge
Lew,To say Halcro's results are, or not the result of price is laying it on a little thick.  Are you like a fan boy who must devastate all opposition?Just because you or Halcro chose not to go with a mono cart, does not mean there is no benefit.  ...

Find a series 1 ebony Virtuoso with a busted cantilever. Send it to Soundsmith .  I heard he now has boron/micro.  I like the Victor Z1/SASTry a Shure DJ cart for kick ass dynamics. Some models put out 9mV. For rock, you have it turned up to 11 ri...

Funny you should mention encapsulating. The AHT non-signature had encapsulated Vishay space shuttle resistors.  Those babies didn't budge from being next to the sun to absolute zero. They are the plug-in resistors for gain and load and are right o...

Lew, Now you tell me. The greatest cowboy hero of all time told me to eat lead. He missed me cause I was partially behind a tree, but I gave it a try. Can't say I liked it much. Didn't have a lot of taste, and caused tremors of the spirit and inso...

Not a good idea to be touching the lead, especially with little cuts on your fingers.  Wear rubber gloves at the least. If you're cutting the lead with a tin snip you have to be careful of sharp edges etc.Laminating to AL makes no sense to me. Mos...

Halcro, It seems that it isn't as uneven as it looked. With a raised edge or 2  going around every rotation it looks like a warped LP.  Lead isn't that malleable,.  It's bendable but tends to stay where you leave it. Your fingers won't leave a dep...
