Amp Basics: Tube Preamp w/Solid State Power Amp.
Do a search for tube preamps, there's been quite a bit of discussion on them. I run a TAD150sig tube pre into a McCormack DNA1 power amp. This has been a very good combo in many folks systems...including mine. I run power-hungry 4 ohm speakers &am...
Build my own speakers?
You might take a look at the Linkwitz Orion (http://www.linkwitzlab.com/index.html). Siegfried has done all the critical design work, you need to assemble parts & build the cabinets...or just order a premade set. Note that the Orion is an acti...
Why Do Audio Engineers Use Different Speakers?
One question that comes to mind in this discussion is that if the engineer uses such different equipment/speakers (relative to an audiophile) & optimizes the sound based on very different speakers...then is it dumb luck (most likely not) that ...
Room Treatments - Where to learn more?
Here's some links I had from another post a while back:This one is for a home theater, but his approach is fairly typical.http://www.sbrjournal.net/journalsite/archives/acoustics/acoustics.htm This next one is a great resource, scroll down to the ...
Review: Dahlquist DQ-10 Speaker
If any of you were to invest in a pair today would you go after the 10's or the 20(i)'s or 30(i)'s?
Modern day female jazz recommendations
Inga SwearingenHear her on The Prairie Home Companion over the weekend...bell-like voice..clean, pure..wonderful....reminded me of Eva Cassidy.
Joan Armatrading
Not Joan...but if you like Joan & something a bit different...and very well recorded, try 900 Miles by Bethany & Rufus.
Powering On/Off Tube CD Player Jolida JD-100
I'm also interested in the standby option on the Jolida...what portion of the unit is still running? Everything except the tubes?
Affordable Power Cords
Here you go(Bob Crump's power cord):http://www.audiotweaks.com/diy/bobcrump_pc/page01.htmDo a search on AA..it's a very good cord. Used cryo'd cable & terminations for an additional step up. Easy to make & inexpensive. .
Speaker life expectancy: How long can you buy used
I'm running Snell Type A's that are 28 years old and they sound GREAT. The woofer surrounds have been replaced. If you use the right surround replacements and break them in you should be good to go. Seven years old...? Just nicely broken in. .
Light-Rigid vs. Mass Loaded Racks - Help
I think the surface the rack sits on tends to determine, at least from a logic point of view, what camp to go with. If you're on concrete then mass loaded. If you're on a suspended floor then the light & stiff route. Then there's the intangibl...
What's your latest "Discovery"
Just picked up "Bethany & Rufus, 900 Miles". Acoustic guitar, cello, percussion, smoky female vocals doing modern arrangements of traditional music...topped off with an excellent recording. Listened to it for the first time this morning and wi...
What's your latest "Discovery"
Fred Hirsch Trio Plays.....Coleman, Coltrane, Davis, Ellington...Heard it today on Pandora...it's on my list.
The Room
Another vote for room treatments. My room (balcony) was harsh with respect to the high end & slap echo. Some optimization of the speaker setup along with five 2x4 foot panels from ATS Acoustics (two for 1st reflections & 3 for wall behind ...
Alpha Core Goertz
FWIW...I run a biwire setup with the top end being AC MI-2's & the bottom braided Cat5...both are high capacitance/low inductance cables. Amp is a McCormack DNA-1. No zobels...no issues. I'll be switching out the Cat 5 cables in favor of a sec...
