Who R U? I ask myself that question sometimes in an indirect way (I'm 23, the youngest so far i guess). I was born in Cleveland, Ohio and lived there about a year before moving to Eugene, Oregan for two years. Then lived in Wichita, Kansas for seven years....
Good CD transport < $500 I've been using a Parasound CD/P 1000 as a transport for several months now with no problems. It has a coax output and nice build quality. The flourescent display could be better though. Audio Advisor still has some B-stocks at $250. The only othe...
OFF, Standby, or ON for amplifiers Except with tube amps. Since their life is so short, you'll be going through a new set of tubes every few months. So leave them off when you are not listening.
Tuner Advice. Help a lost soul. The Dyna FM-3 and FM-1 with multiplex boards can be found on the used market for quite cheap ($75-$125 or less). Audio by Van Alstine has an article on thier website telling how to maintain one and bring it up to spec. www.avahifi.com Right now I'...
Hard to Find As an alternative, if you just can't find one, Carver built one several years ago using vacuum tubes that looked to be very promising too. If you see one of those around you might want to snatch it up. Just an idea.
Optical or Coax digital If I recall correctly, the only time optical might actually be better is if you are doing a ridiculously long run of cable. I could be wrong on that though. But for most home audio applications coax is better.
Bose Bashers Read This ! I can sympathize with all the hostility towards this company. But I can't say that we, whoever that is, are that much wiser or more enlightened for spending a cool $15,000 for speaker cables.
Amplifier Suggestions? I would look at www.avahifi.com or the Sunfire by Bob Carver. I haven't heard the Vandy's, but I'm not into this system matching/synergy thing so it shouldn't matter. I just figure find the best amp and it should go well with whatever you have (ex...
Bang & Olufsen Speakers I've only briefly heard them as I was walking through rooms. In general the speaker is about looking good, sound is second. And the ones I've seen weren't built to a very high quality as far as durability. If you just want one, go for it. But near...
stereo system under 6K Go to www.avahifi.com. All their products are reasonably priced. They are factory direct so I figure, when I bought mine, that I'd be getting at least twice the product for the money. I probably got more than that; there engineering seems to be re...
HT system with small speakers check out www.audioc.com. A set of emeralds and a quake might be what you are looking for.
Best Subwoofer? If you have less than a grand I would check out the Titan at www.audioc.com. If you have $1500 to spend I would check out the Kensington at www.avahifi.com. I'll probably be getting the latter in the next few months. Both are factory direct. I've ...
Leave My Tube Amp/Pre-Amp Powered Up? I would leave the CJ's off if your not listening. While its true that that intitial electrical current that runs throught the circuit when an electrical device is turned on is responsible for shortening circuit life, in the case of tubes thier lif...
Integrateds, for $1000.00 I would buy the Van Alstine OmegaIII integrated. Its 85 wpc and sells for $999 factory direct (www.avahifi.com). It may not be on their website, but I believe its available. You'll probably have to wait six weeks for them to build it, but you'll g...
Am I deaf? No, I don't think you are deaf. Although I haven't heard the other electronics in your system, they seem capable of revealing any differences if any. Now of course there is still the issue of the room. But I'm not suprised if they all sound pretty... |
