Review: Harbeth SHL5 30th Anniversary Edition Speaker I can very much connect to your becoming tired of hearing more than you wanted to know about many less than perfect recordings. Because I was having the same problem, I switched from Vandersteen 3a sigs to Harbeths quite happily for quite a while ...
BAT Vk-51 SE vs Aesthetix Calypso A few thoughts from a BAT and Aesthetix user: I prefer the BAT non-SE equipment because you can roll tubes. Perhaps Sidssp's experience of BAT gear seeming more like transister gear comes from using the SE versions. With the BAT VK31 I put in Ampe...
Ascendant verses Quatros Wig - Allow me to mention some equipment I like with the Avalons: I've used a BAT VK31 and VK75, neither SE's (which allowed me to try NOS tubes, which the Avalons like). Good combination. I'm now using a CJ Prem 14 pre with Mullards and a Prem 11...
Ascendant verses Quatros I'm assuming you're talking about the Avalon Ascendants, and I can only offer comparisons between the Ascendants and the Vandersteen 3A sigs from having had both in my home (though I've listened to the Quattros at my dealer's and considered buying...
I just heard an SACD for the first time - damn Agree with Narrod that a lot of it has to do with mastering (although I do think the SACD format offers something that CD can't, at least in theory). There are some very fine sounding CDs that have come out in the last, say, 10 years...AND, there ...
why 3D Holographic sound That's happened on my system--something I noticed even back in the 80's with much different gear. I believe the main culprit is sound reflected from the side walls and perhaps the ceiling and floor. It can be remedied to some extent--perhaps a lar...
liquid sound Sure. My system has been "non-liquid," and with the right (or wrong, I guess) source material, remains capable of being "non-liquid." By "non-liquid," I mean edgy, grainy, not well-resolved, even perhaps subject to mild distortion. In short, harsh...
liquid sound Gunbei did a great job-- smooth, flowing, and without grain. I'd emphsize "without grain" and would add "easy to listen to."
Harbeth - Audio Research? Pubul57 - I think the Vandersteen 3A sigs are very good for certain things, and can be tempered depending upon what's running them. I get listener's fatigue all too easily, and I think most equipment sounds too bright. I went to the RMAF and, fran...
BAT VK-60, VK-55 or ???? I have a VK31 pre-amp that I've used with ARC, VTL and BAT amps. (The BAT was a VK75, not the SE--which means I can play around with NOS tubes, which is fun with the BAT gear). That BAT combo was certainly synergistic. I would imagine you would be...
Harbeth - Audio Research? I was having a problem similar to yours (reported in other threads)...I was using Vandersteen 3A sigs, which are very nice speakers, but they tell you everything that is wrong with the recording, and I just became terribly fatigued by it. I bought...
Tube Amp Recommendation for a solid state guy I've heard some say that tube amps actually make more difference, if you're doing 1/2 solid state and 1/2 tubes. It would be really great if you could borrow some piece of tube gear, amp or pre-amp, and give it a try. If you want more warmth and m...
ARC LS5 mk3 or BAT VK-31 SE I have a VK31 non-SE, into which I put 6 Bugle Boys, and it sounds very nice. I've figured out that I'm not a fan of the 6H30's, and that's one nice thing about the non-SE versions of the BAT's--you can play around with the tubes. And it matters.
Cary SLP-98 v. Manley Shrimp Clio09 - I didn't know either until I looked closely at the specs in the manual (after finding the sound somewhat unsatisfying). And, indeed, one of the interesting things about silver wire is that it sounds sweet in the highs. But to me at least,...
Cary SLP-98 v. Manley Shrimp The SLP-98 has silver wire in it. I'd be sure you like the sound of silver wire before investing in it. I don't, myself, and was disappointed with the 98, and unloaded it relatively quickly, as I have everything else I've tried with silver wire. |
