Review: Audio Research D-70 mkII Tube amp
@daveyf   The instructions to bias the tube specify only adjusting the bias voltage.to 65mV, not adjusting anything else.  Of course, the instructions also state to get a quad set of matched tubes... It's not hard to do, your tech just wants your...
The Linn Karousel bearing.
Yes, I've been told the Lingo 4 is a significant upgrade. The Karousel is an amazing upgrade. the noise level has dropped significantly.   IMHO, the bearing upgrade is fundamental to the table as it removes a lot of the vibration from the turntab...
Speakers for First Watt SIT-1 amp
For the last three weeks, I've driving a DIY version of the SIT-3 with AN K LX speakers. The SIT-3s sit next to the DIY F4s and a pair of DIY Aleph 2. There's also been a DIY SIT version of the XA25 ( SAS252) which I want. After that... I might...
Review: Audio Research D-70 mkII Tube amp
I’m late to the party.... At one point, I had two of these babies.. but in a fit of madness I sold one. I still have one, as a back up... wonderful amp. Biasing? Come on, it’s a piece of cake. Multimeter and plastic tool and you’re set. Just bia...
The Linn Karousel bearing.
My Karousel bearing arrived today. Took the table to get it installed. I was amazed at the quality of the workmanship... Now, I can’t wait to -not- hear it. ;-) Time to start saving to upgrade from Lingo to Lingo 4.
Preamp Recommendation for First Watt F4
I'm running a CJ PV9 with the upgraded teflon caps.
Review: Conrad Johnson PV-9 Tube preamp
It’s been quite a few years since this post... but I must add that since, CJ has added the teflon capacitor upgrades.. which is not cheap. But if you send your PV9 for refurbishing you can get an all-in deal with the caps... so your preamp will n...
Magnepan 1.7 speakers (asking for a friend)
20x14x8 room. Both 12s and now 1.7s.   Laid out along the long axis.  Three feet from sides, four  from front room.  My couch is about six feet from the back wall, so about 11 feet from ear to speaker. Slightly toe'd in.  Tweeters to the outside...
High Output Preamp for First Watt SIT-3?
The SiT is a class A device with the transconductance qualities of a triode... so I would not define it as ’solid state" sound. Now, the other amps... Maggies. I got 1.7s and 12s. Also got clone F4, F5, A2 and mono A5s. ( Plus a set of SiT transi...
Ridiculous resale price of vintage equiment
" I have a very nice main system, all “ new” stuff but also have vintage gear, Marantz 2325- Pioneer 1050- Yamaha 640- JBL L100 - Apt Holman- Adcom etc and love it all and the sound because it brings me back to listening to music when I was young....
Ridiculous resale price of vintage equiment
Jerry- I don’t think it’s people who need money, I think it’s a combination of people staying at home, having not many things to spend money on and as the prices started to go up, the flippers stepped in and took it from there. In regards to use...
Ridiculous resale price of vintage equiment
Note that I’m not referring to old truly vintage gear.. I’m not negating that older stuff, usually with tubes in it, are worth rebuilding because tubes have a sound quality (mostly in the midrange) that makes them extremely appealing. Take a Fishe...
when did it all get so complicated?
Many ways to do this. Hopefully you’ll get the hint... it’s pretty easy, really. (1,2) In our home offices, I got a couple of NuForce DDA-100 DAC/Amps. Windows 8 laptops via USB to DDA-100 USB input. PC plays Tidal HiFi and using FooBar to play m...
thought on eBay?
NO eBay for audio. For audio, I’ve used them 3 times: (1) Year 2000, bought a Marantz 4140.. seller shipped me a 2240. A clear case of fraud. It took me a month and I ended up paying 50 bucks for the receiver because I didn’t want to have to shi...
I have a weird buzz issue; can you help me solve the problem?
It sounds like a ground problem.   Integrated amp, plugged with a cheater ( no ground ) directly to the plug, no inputs, nothing else, and you get a low level buzz that is leaking into the amp circuits.Perhaps the outlet is wired backwards, it hap...
