| oppo's volume control I tried this with my 103. This is a digital volume. I ran it into my Mac 7106. Transparent-Yes. The sound was better through a preamp. An analogue volume sounded better and most preamps have some gain which can make a tremendous difference. | |

| Using high powered amp at low volumes power You could switch preamps. A passive pre with no gain would help. However, you really only need 10-25 watts as Tom said. My nearfield amp is a whopping 12 watts and I doubt I ever use more than 2-3 watts. | |

| 300B or EL34 is a better well rounded amplifier That all depends on your system and your tastes...and the individual amp. The only comment I am sure on is that most EL34 amps have more power than most 300B amps. |
