Do SACD player start up slower
Pioneer dv45A takes 5 to 10 seconds. I am more annoyed by the fact that with some discs (not all) it halts after it displays the type of disc, and I have to hit the PLAY button a second time to make things happen.
DC offset level to avoid speakers damage-
Bob_bundas. You found my goofup before I got back to fix it. Yes...divided by R. So it is even less of a problem.I had occasion to adjust bias only once when I fixed a 60 watt Tandberg receiver output stage. I don't remember what the output bias s...
Green-'ening' CD's
Error "correction" means that after the process is done the information is identical to what was there before the error occured. Therefore inaudible. Audible effects will exist only when the error rate exceeds the capability of the encoding scheme...
Adding a step-up transformer
When I was into MC cartriges I had a Signet transformer. When I replaced my preamp, I got one with a MC input (Tandberg) because I thought that transformers in general were a bad idea. Not so. The Signet transformer was perfectly OK. (It ought to ...
DC offset level to avoid speakers damage-
POWER = VOLTAGE^2 * RESISTANCE0.050^2 * 8ohms = 0.02 WATTS.You don't have a problem!
Yet another SACD question
Only SACD discs that are "Hybrid" (2-layers) can be played on regular CD players. My Pioneer dv45A player (SACD and DVD-A) has both Stereo and Multichannel analog outputs (as well as digital optical which I use when playing regular CDs). There is n...
Reversed Polarity LP Cuts - Examples?
Back in the days of matrix quadraphonic, I experimented quite a bit with phase issues. If your preamp has this capability, here are some interesting things you might try.1. Run one channel inverted all the time, and reverse the speaker wires to co...
Can I get "Great" used speakers for $1800??
I am a Magnepan enthusiast, but I wouldn't buy them used if they had to be shipped. They are not easily packed up to prevent damage in shipping.Happily there is an alternative! Buy a set of MG1.6, brand spanking new, for what you have to spend.
Tubes v. SS: can you mix and match?
Why not? It's a good bet that the music you hear has been through many transistor circuits during the recording and disc mastering process, so even if your equipment is tubular you can't attribute its sound to that feature. Maybe it's good for oth...
DVD player w/ 2ch 5ch conversion ability?
Your idea of a multichannel player that includes matrix logic circuitry to create the missing channels when playing 2-channel media is very interesting. I have not heard of such a device, but it wouldn't be too hard to Mod an existing unit to do t...
Dipole/bipole or direct radiating
The multichannel specs say that your speakers should not be dipole/bipole, but mine are, and they work fine. Besides, I just like the way they sound.
Advis for a pre with 600 ohms output ?
600 ohms is par for the course with tube equipment. As stated above, no power amp should be a problem, but you are more susceptable to problems due to long or low quality (high capacitance) coax interconnects than is the case with solid state prea...
Does the subwoofer have to be on the floor?
Sounds like most of the problems people mention relate to things rattling. If you play the right kind of music, and your SW is up to it, things are going to rattle and shake wherever the SW is placed in the room! But, with patience, you can track ...
SACD - what gives?
Prior media, LP, Tape, CD, have never been able to convey the quality of sound inherent in the master tapes made even 40 years ago. SCAD can bring those master tapes into your listening room (assuming that the people who made the SACD didn't screw...
Help, I'm going crazy with vinyl noise
I'm not sure I understand what happened when you "switched the leads to the transformer" but I would have switched speakers to see if the sound moved or stayed with the speaker. The general description of your problem sounds like a speaker voice c...
