When using a DAC does the cd player really matter?
I tend to agree. Provided the player has a solid, stable transport mechanism and you're happy with the remote control and functionality then you're set. That's why a lot of people look for older players like the Pioneer Elite models that don't sou...
Interconnect for Project table....
I would look for used Kimber Hero. You can probably find a used one or one and a half meter run for around $100 if you get lucky. I found them to be fast and very tight in the bass with a deliberate, solid sound and plenty of punch.
Bang & Olufsen BeoGram 3000
The SP12 pickup is long out of production and replacement styli are very hard to come by so that's a big problem right off the bat. The old 3000 was an okay table sonically but I can't see any reason to use one today unless it has some special app...
Harman Kardon T35C Turntable and TCC phono preamp?
Hi Jerry,To be honest, I'd never even heard of the TCC brand until this thread and it took me a lot of Googling before I found a site that sold them. You gotta admit...they appear really uninspiring. Given TCC's relative obscurity and lack of "aud...
Harman Kardon T35C Turntable and TCC phono preamp?
Regarding the turntable -- YES! Very nice unit. I've owned the T25, T35 and T55 over the years and they are all perfectly competitive with $300-$500 units of today depending on cartridge. Regarding the phono preamp -- NO! Look for a used NAD PP1 o...
Tube Buffers worth it?
...But of course, people don't use it for its so-called intended purpose. And in fact, if a solid state device were marketed to perform the same function, it would sell in the single digits.
Tube Buffers worth it?
In my experience with the MF, they don't make an improvement so much as change the character of the sound. That's strictly a matter of personal taste. If you want tube sound and an improvement as well, a better (but far more expensive) move would ...
Tube smell?
On the PrimaLuna amps, as I think Art Dudley noted at one point, the stock tubes have kind of a smoky smell when they warm up. If you have to put your nose right up to the tubes to smell it, I wouldn't worry too much. If you can smell it from your...
Rega P2, Thorens TD-180 or Music Hall MMF-5.1?
>>The RB30 arm is phenomenal<<Well, if in fact you meant the RB300, you're quite incorrect. The RB300 is a solid, serviceable, and reasonably high value tonearm but hardly phenomenal.Come on, man...the guy is asking about a starter turn...
Allison 3 information, please
That's awesome! What a great score. I'm surprised these speakers didn't find an audience the second time around. Klipsch still sells a fair number of their Heritage designs and people who need a speaker that can sit flush against the wall -- but w...
Review: Sennheiser HD580 Precision Headphones Tweak
I'd forgotten I'd written this until Samvid posted to the thread! It seems Sennheiser killed the HD580...what a bummer. In the five years since I've written this thread, I've had the opportunity to hear the HD600 and HD650 powered by a number of ve...

Rega P2, Thorens TD-180 or Music Hall MMF-5.1?
The TD190 is a good fully-automatic model but the manual P2 and MMF-5 are sonically superior.
Rega P2, Thorens TD-180 or Music Hall MMF-5.1?
The Thorens TD-180 has long been unavailable, so that narrows your choice to two. (If you mean the TD-170, forget it; it's junk.)The Music Hall MMF-5 has a slightly more sophisticated deck than the Rega, but the Rega P2 has a far, far superior ton...
Is the Goldring 1022X a good fit...
I can't imagine why not. If memory serves, the 1000 series is moderate compliance, so you may want to try it with the Sumiko and the stock Technics headshell and then make a decision. The guy who would know for sure is Kevin at KAB, who is THE Tec...
