The Goldmund electronic arm (T3) is not really that reliable. Servicing is a problem with this table. My advice is stay away from it. 
Digital direction
My advice is stay put and do not invest $$$ in the digital format for the time being. Use the available fund to buy a decent turntable/arm/cartridge and start exploring the world of analog LP playback.Cheers............. 
How to test a cartridge?
I think either the preamp or the cartridge have problem. I suggest you to connect the right phono cable(the one with sound) to the left input in your preamp(phono input) and the left to the right. If there is sound from the left but no sound from ... 
What does "Sounds too Hifi" mean???
"Sounds too Hifi" mean the system don't sound like the real thing at all.Or it is a polite description that mean the system sounds like SHXX !!!If a system "sounds too Hifi", it always remind you that you are listening to reproduce music.
