Jimmy Smith's best albums?
The only Verve album of Jimmy Smith's I enjoy is "The Organ Grinder's Blues". I much prefer the Blue Note releases, especially The Sermon. 
Gene Harris suggestions?
He recorded his best work with a trio called "The Three Sounds". I believe they're on Blue Note. One in particular features Stanley Turrentine on tenor. It's truly a gorgeous album. 
Jazz Recommendations.
I think Boa2's list would scare most neophyte jazz listeners away. Although I love the albums listed I don't agree it's a good start. Too out there for the most part. 
Which musician retired too soon?
I don't know if Syd Barret actually retired or just kind of lost it.Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwin I think are in the same boat (maybe I'm wrong). Instead we have Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham.
