Digital Audio Denmark convertors
Bruce, have you directly compared the MH ULN-8 to the other ones you mentioned? If so, could you briefly articulate how it compared sonically to the other DAC's you mentioned? From what I've read the ULN-8 seems to be getting consistently rave rev...
Digital Audio Denmark convertors
In my experience, "ad hoc" comparisons of disparate digital audio products such as the MPS-5, DAD AX24 and Berkeley Alpha DAC (and others) without consideration and optimization of the signal chain for each product are misleading and will lead to ...

Thanks Jbarnett. I have spoken with Clayton on several occasions and have deep respect for his speaker designs. I especially liked the evolution from the 2.0 to the 2.3. I almost bought the 2.3's in fact, but my current listening room forces the s...
PC, Lynx AES16 card, Berkeley DAC... What else?
I've tried the legacy PC and Mac music server platforms both with the AES16 PCI card. I would say that the PC running Windows 7 with the latest 64bit Lynx driver and a music player that uses WASAPI is better than the legacy approaches.

I hear ya Tvad..... I thought the same thing...i.e. 25W should be enough power. Once there are some more reviews out there on the J2 I may have to try one just for the sake of curiosity.

Jbarnett, thanks for your post. What speakers and pre-amp are you using? I was going to try the J2 but at 25W into 8ohms Nelson and Mark at Reno Hi-Fi thought it wouldn't have enough power to drive my 95db efficient speakers. Have you auditioned t...
Best Used Speaker Under $4,000 w/ Respectable Lows
I suggest you check out the Abbey speaker designed by Dr. Earl Geddes. They are amongst the best speakers I've heard in my 30+ years in this hobby/obsession. When you take into account price/performance I put them at the top of the list. They punc...
PC, Lynx AES16 card, Berkeley DAC... What else?
I have a Zalman silent music server running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with the Lynx AES16 PCI card feeding a Berkeley Alpha DAC. This set-up significantly bested by previous CD/Pre reference player. I can assure you that the buzz about the Berkeley is ...
Interaction with music server while listening?
Ral, you have many choices, and as someone noted, you need to take into account your computer hardware and software literacy in deciding which path to take. After alot of research and experimentation, I built my own silent PC music server using the...

George, my thanks to you for sharing your experience with the A-S amps, as well as to Pubul57. I had to buy the M-60 without having heard it and the conversations with you guys gave me the confidence to take that risk. I would agree with Pubul57's...
Cable for Lynx card to Berkeley DAC
Ral,The Lynx card only has the HD26 pin out, therefore, your best single cable solution is a HD26-to-XLR cable. Otherwise, you're talking two cables - one to convert HD26 to XLR and then an XLR-XLR cable. Of course this would degrade sonic quality...
Cable for Lynx card to Berkeley DAC
Ral - sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for your kind comments. The Zalman silent music server and Alpha DAC are producing the best digital sound I've heard. On Hi-Rez material to my ears the Alpha DAC is better than vinyl. For remote contr...

I had a chance to A/B the XA30.5 vs the Atma-Sphere (A-S) M-60Mk3.0 (with stock driver tubes - not the NOS which are recommended for top performance) on my Geddes Abbey speakers. The Abbey's are a large sealed box 2 way monitor with a compression ...

Tvad's points are well taken. FWIW, Pubul57 came to the same conclusion after comaring the XA30.5 and the Amta-Sphere M-60 on his Merlins. I have been very impressed with the XA30.5 on my Geddes Abbey speakers. It smoked my hybrid amp. My speakers...
Cable for Lynx card to Berkeley DAC
I initially used an inexpensive Gotham HD26 to XLR cable which was pretty good. But, depending on how resolving your system is, the quality of your hearing and the value you place on accuracy, I have found that the Cardas Clear HD26 to XLR cable t...
