Is this the sound of clipping? ...but there is more energy in the low frequencies, so you'll get the clipping first in the low frequencies. You can probably get clipping without low notes if you play it loud enough. But the other choice is possible, too, you may have a problem ...
DSP Devices for Room/Speaker Correction Well, equalizers in general are, theoretically, room correction devices. The problem is, in the analog domain, every time you introduce another device into the stream, you take another derivative of the signal, and therefore introduce phasing prob...
Do I really need to Bi-Wire? The thing about bi-wiring is that it effectively lowers the gauge, which is a good thing (less resistance). The other alternative you may want to consider is upgrading your jumper. Finally, if you do bi-wire, make sure they are exactly the same le...
Worst Music of All-Time I have to completely disagree with both the Golden Earring and the W. Carlos listings in this topic. And I actually liked that song "Hit Me, Baby, One More Time" even before I ever saw what BS looked like. Most of the contemporary corporated-gener...
MF A3cr Preamp Review Yes, I also have the X-Can and the X-Pre, and I like them all. System: MSB Link DAC III (I don't mention the transport because I'm embarassed about it, and I'm getting a Rega), X-Pre, X-Can v2, Beyerdynamic DT770, Sunfire Jr. sub (x2), Spendor S3/...
BEST HEAVY METAL BAND Three Way Tie: Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest
MF A3cr Preamp Review I don't have the preamp, but I have the amp, and yes, it is the best solid state amp I have ever heard, better even than Krell. I wish there was a way to hear the preamp without buying it.
Ear Candy: Most startling recordings. On headphones: Jean-Michel Jarre: Equinoxe Pt. 4 (a good recording of this will actually tickle the first time you hear it), Magnetic Fields Pt. 1; Pink Floyd: Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pt. 4 (the guy laughing after one of the lines sounds like h...
All-time best recordings for romance I have to say, the first disc of Bill Laswell's Ambient Compendium (aka Dark Massive/Disengage), is excellent lovemaking music (although I still haven't found the best "seduction" music). I'm still looking to meet the woman who will want to make l...
Best musician in the world? ...otherwise, Fripp, Buckethead or Satriani, just for their well-rounded-ness (in terms of styles).
Best CD Player for $1000 ...that I've heard. Have not heard the MF, though...
Forgive me. No, nothing else is important. It _does_ help to be aware of these issues, such as impedance mismatches. But all problems will result in bad sound, so your ultimate judge is still your hearing.
CDP upgrade You can't go wrong either way (MSB or Rega). If you can afford it, both! I've actually heard this combination, and now I must own it. But either one by itself is an excellent improvement.
Any advice on CD player upgrade? I realize this was not in your list of choices, but you might want to look at the Rega Planet. I borrowed one once (one of the old ones, mind you), and now I must have it. If you've already ruled this out for other reasons, I apologize...
Most achingly-beautiful music Ethnicolor - Jean-Michel Jarre pretty much the entire _It's My Life_ album - Talk Talk That short instrumental track right before Danchiva on the album _French Kiss_ - Bob Welch The final few tracks of _The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking_ - Roger Wa... |
