CJ preamps?
For $1500, almost all the vintage CJ PV series preamps are within reach. If you don't have a turntable, then any of the newer models PV10,'12, '14 and '15 have line stage only models. The Premier series was a few more bucks. For that $1500 price, ...
Magnepan, How Low Can You Go...power-wise
How low is your listening level? I have 3.6r's and have used as little as 75 watts and as much as 300. Biamping helps, as does a small room. If maggies broke with anything over, say 100 watts of drive, the issues regarding power would be moot. If ...

Happy XM44 owner here. Call Phil. I'm sure he could cook up something that would suit the Spendors!
Bi-Amp Crossover Advice
I have 3.6R's and use the XM44 crossover. 120 watts on the mid/highs should be enough unless you need "headbanger" levels. I have 150 tube monoblocks on the mid/highs but have used as little as 75 watts. I use a 300 watt SS amp on the bass panel. ...
Is bias setting necessary on matched tubes?
Unless your amp is of the "audobias" type (primaluna is one brand) then you will have to readjust the bias. Matched tubes just means that they are very similair in terms of operating characteristics. Important! If your amp has only one bias adjust...
No preamp 'Balance' control?
I'll never buy a preamp without a balance control. I think it's mandatory on a tube preamp as the tubes will age slightly different and a balance control helps keep things in line.
CJ Premier Triode?
Any amp with a "triode" switch or configuration option will have less power than the tetrode or pentode version. Usually half the power is routine. I like the option of switching between the modes. It gives you a chance to easily compare the two.H...
Sota Sapphire with or without vacuum?
By "dullness" I meant that the reduction in higher frequency resonances seems to make the highs less prominent when using the vacuum. A quick A/B would indicate that without vacuum you get more "highs" but that really isn't the case. The vacuum is...
Sota Sapphire with or without vacuum?
Well, With the vacuum off, the highs are more pronounced, more "splashy", the bass is a little loose. I think this is due to the record being free to resonate due to the stylus/groove interaction. With the vacuum on, things seem to be duller, but ...
Repair my C-J PV11 or try to replace?
Keep the C-J. Most new(er) preamps in that price range are hardly full function, having just a line stage, no balance control or tape loop. Maybe remote control, but no tone controls either. Either have C-J refresh it or send it to Bill Thallman a...
VAC Standard 220 monoblocs
Depends on how large your room is and how loud you listen. I take it you have the VAC amps already? If so then use them to drive the 3.6's full range. Not happy? Then bi-amp them and use a solid state amp on the bass panel with the VAC's on the mi...
Who bought ARC?
The omission in the press release (no home theater stuff) might be the reason the company was sold for the range indicated. Their customer base is aging (like me) and is not being replaced fast enough. What are their annual sales? That would give ...
Sota Star Sapphire help
Contact SOTA, they're really helpful. However why do you feel the need to fine tune the suspension? If it looks unlevel it's because the weight of your tonearm and armboard isn't heavy enough. Under the tonearm board is a place to put lead shot (s...
Is it worth it to repair a cj pv2ar?
Oops! I forgot to mention that you might want to contact Bill Thalman at musictechnology.com. He is the previous tech director for C-J, and does repair & upgrade on the various C-J products. He's quite reasonable as far as cost goes. I agree w...
Is it worth it to repair a cj pv2ar?
10 years ago? Wow, I guess the 'gon has been around for awhile. There are better sounding C-J preamps for sure. But the current ones have a little more leaned out accurate sound than the vintage models. That said, a PV5 or 7 would be good step up ...
