Playing DSD files
Oops sorry for the typo, yes it's "ASIO+DSD: " etc.  I don't have DSD Transcoder but you can try configuring it to play the files you want. It should support .dff files, I can play them just fine. Or you could try the Topping ASIO driver which sho...
Playing DSD files
@o_holter Did you get DSD working in Foobar?  I've used it for many years and it hasn't failed me and it sounds wonderful.  I also have a DSD Direct capable DAC, the SMSL D-6, and I believe that mode offers the highest sound quality.  You might ha...
Steely Dan UHQR
Aja was done as a Japanese SHM-SACD back in 2010. Chad does shootouts in his office to make sure the UHQR beats the original.  He thinks they nailed it on this one.  Not sure if he takes the same care with the SACD.
How easily can you distinguish between different DACs?
@mapman +1. High prices guarantee nothing except perhaps a very high level of salesmanship.  I wish things were that simple, then we can all just save up for a dcs or MSB and everyone else can just go home. But that's simply not the case. That's t...
Step Up transformer
I use a Cinemag 1254 based SUT and I think the results are wonderful. Running it at 20:1 with an old Koetsu Black, lots of drive and loads of detail. I was having a hiss problem with my phono pre, lots of noise at 60dB max gain on my MS Phonomena....
How easily can you distinguish between different DACs?
@balooo2 My super bargain performer is the SMSL D-6.  Edges out my DO100 due to DSD Direct mode, as PCM performance is roughly equivalent (both fantastic). I'm amazed at what these cheap DACs can do nowadays, high fidelity available to the masses.
How easily can you distinguish between different DACs?
I find it hard to tell the difference between DACs. I took this test and couldn't tell between a 90dB SINAD and 120dB. That was a super cheap trashy one vs a SOTA performing one. Some DACs add coloring of their own, and I don't think it should do ...
Significant steps? (DAC)
@tvrgeek Congrats on the new DAC! Love SMSL and that has flagship performance at a great price. I'm loving my D-6 even though it's their entry level balanced DAC, sounds wonderful and fully transparent to my ears. I actually have my eye on the new...
Significant steps? (DAC)
I'm totally on board with technically perfect DACs. I have 2 of them, one ESS and the other AKM. I prefer the AKM chip, mostly because it supports DSD Direct, which does sound better to my ears. Great performance at dirt cheap prices, works for me...
Step Up Transformer
I have a Cinemag 1254 based SUT built by Ned Clayton on eBay.  I find it to sound fantastic, and should be similar to one of Bob's Devices but is much cheaper.  It has 4 gain settings for ultimate flexibility, and 3 ground settings for the most qu...
Is D-Sonics audio still in business
A Purifi based amp might be what you’re looking for. I have a March Audio amp (P502, discontinued) and am a fan of their build quality and incredible sonics, but they’re based in Australia. If small size is what you’re looking for, then you don’t ...
Which SUT to match Koetsu Rosewood Standard in my system?
I've had great results with my Cinemag 1254 SUT by Ned Clayton. It has 4 gain settings so you can experiment with what works. I found that 1:20 is best for my Koetsu Black, it's nice to have plenty of drive, and 8mV shouldn't overload your phono s...
Ripping CD's
I use Burrrn for PC. Nice freeware that'll burn anything to disc. I still like using my old Sony ES changer, has CD text and is lots of fun. I don't think media brand matters that much, have had success with TDK, Maxell, Memorex, and Verbatim. Jus...
Suggestions for Phono Preamp
I would also go the SUT route along with a dedicated MM stage with no switches, like the Darlington MP-7. I have a Ned Clayton Cinemag 1254 SUT and it sounds fantastic in every way. 4 different gain settings and 3 ground positions, never heard my ...
VAS (Steven Leung) cartridge repair/retipping service?
I sent him my old Koetsu Black. He had to straighten out the suspension and put a new line contact stylus on there. Price was reasonable and the Koetsu sings again. Great work doing the micro surgery this requires. Waited a couple months though, t...
