Counterpoint SA-3.1 and 5.1
You speak some truth, Sgrove. To a certain extent I agree with you. Will dumping $2k into a $375 pre-amp be worth it? I say it depends on what you are after. Do you want a nice $375 Counterpoint pre-amp that sounds like $2375? Or, do you want a $2...
Advice on ML Prodigys
"I maybe getting a pair of Prodigys through Chesky Records..." ? Did you win them? Chesky had a recent drawing for a pair--are you the lucky guy? If so, man am I jealous!
Acurus A250 owners...need help.
As a 9 year A250 user, I have tried more than one preamp. I haven't tried them all, but enough that some generalizations come forward. Generally, the A250 can be bright through the mids and highs (maybe a bit grainy) with a stong midbass and botto...
Audiostatic Wing PhiHybrid Electrostat
Good question. I heard the older version of the wing in 92 or 93 at the Stereophile HiFi show in San Francisco. Deeeep imaging and good lateral staging. Owing to there flat panel design, they had an exceptionally narrow sweet spot for the best ima...
Blue room s alien minipods
Vincent--While I can't comment on their sonic abilities in detail, I did hear the minipods at 2001 CES. After room upon room of Chinese-death-chant drum whacks (what are they supposed to sound like in real life, anyway?), the minipods were playing...
best amp for Martin logan sl-3
Has anyone tried Plinius? Shemply613--how's the Innersound treating you?
anyone with a 'system' near me?
The directory sounds good to me. I'm in the Sacramento area-zip 95661. Anyone near?
Who 'won' the show at CES
Merlin won! Flipping awesome sound! About $40k in Joule-Electra amps (or more, I think :-}). Butcha know who came in second? Totem. Arro's with the Red Rose integrated. Unambitious set up, and yet striking. Neraly flabbergasting! Vince, the design...
Rack mount preamps for cheap
Try a Counterpoint. Good tube dynamics--probably similar to your Carver except that the bass will probably not be "giant". Most built in the 80'2 were rack-mountable, I believe. SA-3 & 3.1 should go for around $300-400 while the newer SA-5 ser...
Supreme recording!
XTC Skylarking on MFSL. A top-ten best pop concept album of all time.
Best system for opera lover at $30,000

Counterpoint preamps
I own an SA-3, one of the first pre's ever made by Counterpoint. I think it was made in 1983...anyway, I bought it second-hand for $350 and had Michael Elliot repair it (www.altavistaaudio.com) and it sounds excellent. The controls are old, so eve...
