Feickert Protractor - anyone use one?
The $250 Feickert does indeed measure spindle-to-pivot accurately. A $2 ruler does also.More money for whiskey and music!
Arm and cart resonance range -- discussion
Further agreement with Syntax. Those numbers won't tell you anything about how a particular combination will sound. All they can do is identify a serious mis-match, and those are rare. The large majority of today's cartridge/arm combos resonate clo...
Need advice from Triplanar mk.7 owners
Aha! Now I see the problem. Of course this explains why the azimuth adjustment pin needs to be angled so.This shouldn't be acceptable in an arm at this price point. I answered an email from Salavat before spotting this thread and suggested that if...
Feickert Protractor - anyone use one?
More agreement with Stiltskin.Even if the lines on the Feickert were as fine as those on the Mint, which they're not, it would still suffer from the fatal flaw of not being built on a mirror.Without the parallax effect afforded by a mirror, it's i...
Need advice from Triplanar mk.7 owners
The arm looks normal to me, though the user obviously hasn't centered the azimuth adjustment. The first photo (when maximized on screen) clearly shows that the pin is adjusted to a position that's WAY anti-clockwise from vertical. The threads on the...
How effective is the Onzow Zerodust?
A ZeroDust will do no harm, but by itself it won't clean a stylus completely. Liquid products work better, but they pose some risks and are not quite as effective as the Magic Eraser. The ME also poses some risks (so does any stylus cleaning metho...
TriPlanar Tips
Pradeep,Glad you took the time to try this teeny tweak. A subtle and mild "you're welcome" back to you. :-)
TriPlanar Tips
Lew,Your experience is consistent with other posters including myself, on this thread and others. The amount of anti-skating required is indeed cartridge dependent. This is no surprise if we think about how skating force is generated.Skating force...
TriPlanar Tips
Nandric,If you go back up this thread to my post on 9-16-06, you'll find a tip regarding O-rings instead of the anti-skate (or anti-bias) weight. They provide an easy way to reduce and adjust lateral force whilst still applying more than "zero".
To bias or not to bias
It depends on the quality of the amp, the tubes and the stability of the incoming voltage. My amp hardly ever needs rebiasing, even after a tube change. I check it every 6 months or so if I have nothing better to do, but it hasn't really changed i...
TriPlanar Tips
Mike/Dan,I thought it was odd too, since as Mike says the wires are often braided (and certainly touching) inside the arm. I understand it's for mechanical damping, that's why I tried it. Maybe I'll try again, or in pairs as Dan suggests. We have ...
TriPlanar Tips
I tried braiding my leads together and got a hum. Separating them as widely as possible eliminated it.
TriPlanar Tips
Pradeep,The benefits are "subtly mild"! Less than removing the damping trough, but audible, depending on system and ears of course. If you're a klutz then don't bother, but provided you protect your cartridge there should be little risk. Written i...
TriPlanar Tips
Mike,The same friend who discovered the sonic benefits of removing the damping trough and arm rest recently tried removing his cueing mechanism. He reported a degradation in sound. Not what he expected or what most of us would predict, but his ear...
TriPlanar Tips
Mike,Sorry to hear you've tried that "experiment". :-(The cylindrical housing's there to contain the fluid, obviously, so I guess the question is: "What's the fluid for?" Your explanation is more sensible and your description by analogy to a (hydr...
