Retip for zyx Agree with Stringreen. The ZYX stylus is unique and not available from anyone else that I know of. If you use a different stylus the basic character of the sound will change. You may like the change or not, but FWIW it will no longer be a ZYX.
setting VTF with a digital guage Just make a weighing step that hangs off the side of the digital gauge, with its surface at a typical record height. That's close enough. It's best to fine tune VTF and most other adjustments by listening anyway, so why fuss over the last decimal ...
Is a dimmer noisy when it's turned OFF? Stringreen, Good description. We also get that effect from leaving various appliances plugged in (microwave oven, television, etc.) even when they're switched "off". It's pretty low level, but for insanely critical listening we unplug as many as w...
Is a dimmer noisy when it's turned OFF? Tonywinsc, Tmsorosk expressly asserted that dimmers do not make noise even when on. See the post two above mine. The following poster seemed to agree. Sorry if it wasn't clear that I was responding to those comments.I concur that (IME) dimmers do ...
Is a dimmer noisy when it's turned OFF? Some dimmers do in fact make noise that's clearly audible in some systems. We went through 3 or 4 dimmers before stumbling on one that didn't make noise in ours.Same with transformers (as for 12V lighting systems). To assert that the phenomenon do...

Galibier Teres Redpoint tape drive "LENGTH"? 1. I haven't tried different lengths but the factors mentioned by Richard (Palasr) must all come into play. With so many competing factors, the "optimal" length is likely to be a compromise and quite specific to each setup. His advice to try sever...
VTF issues If the problem isn't easily diagnosed and eliminated (e.g., tonearm wire improperly dressed and snagging on something to cause intermittent changes in downforce) then I agree with Syntax... sell the arm to him!
LP Disaster Swanny, sorry to hear of your mishap. Hope everything is salvageable.Actus, in addition to Dr. Lewm's comments, there've been postings on vinyl sites for years that VPI's fluids are mold-prone when stored for long periods. I have AIVS and MoFi flu...
Fremer's review of the Anna cartridge Mike (and Peter),I did say "unofficial" beta testers. Sorry if the suggestion was a stretch... a thorn is a spike is a thistle! In any event, we're in agreement that Ortofon's blithely ignoring the Q/C issues Fremer described didn't reflect well on...
Fremer's review of the Anna cartridge Thanks for you post Mike. This is the first I have read that that initial run of 8-10 cartridges were "pre-release" samples. Fremer makes no mention of this in the review. Apparently, Fremer (and Mike) were acting as unofficial beta-testers. No on...
Separate playbacks for vinyl, cd? First, I echo what Zd542 said. Assuming proper diligence by the buyer, two $1 components will never sound as good as one $2 component. The very concept is, pardon me, irrational. In 35 years of buying, selling, setting up, adjusting, reviewing and ...
Phantom + A90 question Interesting idea, although a single ridge on the centerline of a cartridge is superior for azimuth adjustment, as it only allows the the cartidge to rotate about one axis. I've used that method on tonearms which lacked azimuth adjustment. It wasn'...
How far out to place motor from platter >>> For minimum belt creep, the platter and motor pulley should be as close as possible, so that the circumference of the platter is in contact with as much of the belt as is possible. This overlooks the other (and more significant) half o...
VPI is Introducing a high-end Direct Drive Table End of Star Wars? As I recall, they burned some outdated military hardware on a bonfire so the Ewoks could stage a dance party. ;-)Of course you have a point, Myles. Thanks to Star Wars, my GPS works pretty well, not to mention Google satellite vi... |
