OK to play 78s with elliptical stylus? Eldartford, that's a wonderful story. Of course I have to ask, was the headmaster's high end TT direct drive? ;^)Hey, a cocobolo stylus would match my plinth and platter, total WAF you know. Twl could even clean and sharpen it for me with his matc...
goodbye to vinyl. . . . grr ------ longish rant Lazarus,If you sell your Teres you'll have to change your handle and we'll certainly miss you. Who's ever sold a Teres? But of course you stated your dilemma clearly: why maintain a high end playback system if there's nothing to play back?Damage f...
TT drive belt comparison Eldartford... it's okay, I've always been a slow starter. There's not much DJ work for us classical lovers and a Teres isn't exactly portable anyway. I guess it might be if it were direct drive, one less box to lug around...You certainly raise an ...
TT drive belt comparison You're just jealous because you don't get to fiddle with belts and strings! :)Wouldn't spinning a 30+ pound platter via DD require a larger, much higher torque motor? How would Teres maintain "almost non-existent levels of cogging and vibration" w...
TT drive belt comparison Dmailer,Thanks for the excellent followup. My mag tape is also .001", so I guess I'll have to order some of that mylar. I'll try to remember to post our impressions.Unfortunately, one of our cats goes beserk for holographic silver gift ribbons. I'...
Linear tracking arms Inna,Agree with all the above. I had an inexpensive linear arm (HK/Rabco ST-8) and now have a mid-price pivoting arm (OL Silver). The linear tracker was cool, and I didn't have to fuss with antiskating or worry (much) about tracking error. Neverth...
TERES - trially Good Steve,Don't think, just do it! The tape made a significant difference on my 265. I predict it will be even more effective at stabilizing platters with lower rotational inertia. You will be quite pleased. To put it in a comparative context, TWL's $2...
Cartridge cleaning Thanks, Bombaywalla.I bought my cartridge used from a gentleman here. It's good to know the stylus wasn't stained yellow by his choice of music! ;^)
Cartridge cleaning Light passes through my stylus easily enough, although the color is more amber than clear. Does this seem right? The ExtremePhono stylus cleaner works alot like the ZeroDust for a substantially lower price. I'm too terrified of breaking my cantilev...
Spacedeck and stylus force guage Very succinct and practical, Twl. Cartridge designers and reviewers may need to know VTF exactly. Listeners just need to duplicate the optimal setting we proved by ear. As long as we measure consistently and repeatably, who cares if 'real' VTF is ...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long Followup review of our HiFi Mod: I'm a bit embarrassed. After two more listening sessions, it appears the odd effects I reported above are entirely due to problems with individual recordings. Like any high end component, TWL's mod reveals more cle...
Is heavy vinyl worth it? I guess the answer must be, "it depends". For us the 180/200g issues are definitely worth it. At a minimum, classical reissues on heavy vinyl tend to have quieter surfaces and less warpage.
Teres 265 Agaffer,Congratulations. I've had my 265 for about ten days so I know just how you feel. You're right about the extraordinary soundstage, bass and detail retrieval. One other thing that impresses us is how much blacker/quieter backgrounds are. Tho...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital? Twl, You'd BUY a car? We kinda figured you'd make your own. High end MP3 players! Ouch. Actually Phasecorrect sent me his test report on one last week. Let's see, "The Hitushi Whale Semen MP3-XXX offers 2,056x upsampling for only $25K. It closely ...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital? Plato,My non-suspended TT is sitting on a large Salamander Synergy stand (Triple 20). Hardly the last word in audiophile vibration management, but with all the components it weighs nearly 400 pounds. I'm on a wood floor too, so I put heavy duty so... |
