Rewire and new power cord or Upgrade TT
I agree with Cmk. Your table and arm are worthy of at least one cartridge upgrade. Not a really costly one, but something up to maybe $400 or so. Imaging and soundstaging depend on extracting clean HF and LF information from the grooves. The 1012 ...
Calculation of effective mass of JMW10 tonearm?
Kehut nailed it. I haven't used a ZYX on a JMW, but VPI/Mike's suggestion to use both their 3g headshell weight and a lighter c/w mounted further aft sounds right to me. I have this vague recollection that the eff. mass of a JMW-10 is around 11g. ...
I'm Stuck, MMF9 vs. MMF7 vs. Scout vs. Space deck
Matrix,Now that you've learned how to adjust arm height, the obvious question is where to set it. This does not depend on your turntable or tonearm. It depends on your cartridge and on the record being played. Which cartridge did you end up with? ...
Record-playing Rituals?
Um, he's wrong. What he probably meant was, "Any cleaner (that we sell) does the same thing." ;-)It's been several months since I last ordered RRL, but at that time Galen Carol had the best price IIRC. http://www.gcaudio.com
Benz ruby H vs. Koetsu Urushi Take 2
I've heard both, though in different systems. It's a close call, which means either one should satisfy your sonic priorities. Based on what I've heard I'd pick the Benz for bass, image density and dimensionality. The Koetsu might get the edge for ...
Record-playing Rituals?
Deb,There have been many reports over the years of VPI's cleaning fluid growing mold. IMO, the best solution is to dispose of it, in an environmentally safe way of course, and use something better. A perusal of this thread will turn up many, err, ...
About Lugnut -- Patrick Malone
Hi Pat,Thanks for the latest. Of course we all cheered this one:Some poor young dude, with a horrible taste in music and the technology to make him go deaf at an early age, pulled up along side me with his windows down. I took the audio assault fo...
Help with phono cartridge loading/ARC SP6B preamp
Badboss429,Sorry for missing the info in your thread title, duh.At any rate, I agree with the responses above. To run a Helikon you'll either need a stepup (which would also adjust the impedance) or a phono stage designed for LOMCs.

What phono stage?
A question for the Pro's in setting up analog good
Matrix,Great answers from Plato and Dan_ed.If you'll mention which cartridge you have, it's possible that others are familiar with it. They could offer VTA and VTF suggestions specific to that cartridge. The FAQ's on Vinyl Asylum contain many artic...
I'm Stuck, MMF9 vs. MMF7 vs. Scout vs. Space deck
As Dan_Ed mentioned, it is all but universally agreed that an attached dust cover is sonically detrimental. Attaching a large, resonating sound trap to your turntable is not the way to get the best music from your investment. If you're going to li...
importance of phono cartridge
Raul,I'm curious about your thoughts on the original question. Which do you think would sound better:a) a $5K cartridge on a $1,600 rig (TT + arm) or,b) a $5K rig with a $1,600 cartridge? If these were your only choices, which would you choose and ...
importance of phono cartridge
Jtimothya,Great post, great insights. Thanks.Dsremer,If you got the HO Airy 3 then I retract my statement about the PH5's gain. It should be perfect.
Cartridge for JMW 10
Great solution Kehut. AFAIK ZYX's optional silver weight is only available on the Airy 2, Airy 3 and UNIverse. JMW owners using lower priced ZYX's would have to get the VPI weights or, as you stated, a lighter c/w to increase their effective mass.
importance of phono cartridge
Dennis,Do let us know how your new cartridge sounds. I don't know anyone else using an Airy 3 on that rig. You are pioneering for us all. BTW, what cartridge(s) were you using on the Scout before?Your PH5's gain is marginal for a .24mv cartridge, ...
