Which CDR is the best for audio?
Both brands are fine. Contrary to popular belief, however, CDR's do in fact sound different. Buy gold disks (such as the Mitsuis), and stay away from Memorex.
B&W Matrix 800
I had a pair of M800's (upgraded to Signature 800's). I initially used a Threshold S450E which was fine. I then tried a Goldmund 9.5++ and a Goldmund 29, each of which sounded great, but neither of which was reliable. I then finally upgraded to Le...
Sony SCD-XA777ES or SCD-1
Two years ago, I purchased an SCD-1, though I also have a 9000ES for video. I purchased it because it was a "statement" player from Sony. I viewed (and continue to view) the SACD capability of the player as a bonus, not the sole reason for buying ...
B&W 802 S3 vs. Nautilus 803 or 804's
In the "for what it's worth" department, here are my views. From 1989 to 1994 I owned a pair of M802S2's; in 1995 I went to Matrix 800's, and in 2002 I went to Signature 800's. The Signature 800 is the flagship of the Nautilus line.I believe that ...
Tuner vs Satellite Radio
I have an XM satellite radio adapter in my car, which has a very good audio system (Mercedes/Bose). Satellite radio has plusses and minuses. For the plusses, the big ones are (i) variety of programming, (ii) lack of interference (multipath, etc.) ...
Survey: B&W
I've owned the DM14, the DM2000, the M802, the M800 and the Signature 800. The Signature 800 blows away everything that came before it, including the M800.
Review: Sony SC-D777es CD Player
Who is Jerry Osment and where can I learn more about what he does?
Subwoofers: Inexpensive Hsu vs REL
I would go with the REL, simply because of its ability to mate with just about anything. It takes its input signal from the same line as your speakers, so it's "seeing" exactly what your speakers see in terms of the amplifier. The flexibility of t...
B&W N800 vs Wilson WP7 vs Revel and others
Since you already have N802's, you obviously like the "B&W sound" in general. As an owner of S800's (same speaker, fancier cabinet), and as the owner of B&W speakers for the past 20 years (including M802's and M800's), I can state categori...
Do you leave your SS amp on all the time?
Unless your amp has an "idle" feature, leave it on all the time. For the rear channels of my system, I use an old Marantz PM94 integrated amp, which is left on all the time. Everyone who I've ever spoken to who owns one of these things has found t...
Best phono stage for $1500....
If you have a medium to high output moving coil cartridge, or a MM cartridge, look into the VTL. I believe it costs about $1100. It's an all-tube unit. I think the dealer has to take care of the cartridge loading, though. I am using one with an ol...
Senior Audiophiles - Audiophile since the 60-70's?
I may have memories that predate any of the prior responses. Although I am 60 years old, I became interested in audio at about the age of 10. My father was an attorney who represented a number of the pioneers in the audio industry, when it was in ...
Best SACD/CD Player up to 3000 street price?
Easy call--SCD-1. I bought one about 6 weeks ago. SACD performance is out of this world, and once you've broken in the CD (which takes several hundred hours), it's competitive with anything out there. Dramatically better than what I was using befo...
Best hi-fi salon 'round
Audio Consultants, Evanston, Illinois. Great selection, knowledgeable salespeople who have made careers there, and an owner who's absolutely tops.
Reel to Reel Question?
There is no question but that R to R is a great format. However, there is one thing which you have to be careful of. That is, never fast-wind the tape through when you're finished with it. Let it run through the machine on normal play. You have to...
