Highest detail cartridges
Hey BIF. I had an old Shelter 90X, needed replacing.Got the Zephyr Star from Music Direct. Great price $1695. Worth every penny. Great sounding cart, a bit warmer than my friends Lyra Titan and Atlas. Not quite as detailed. But many of my audiophi...
Current recordings on vinyl?
I have the new Norah Jones on order, and I'll let you know what it says about the recording. As a bigger issue...if only the major established artists can insist on analog masters, there can be no future for vinyl. True, boutique labels can, and pr...
What cartridge are you using with VPI JMW9
The signature JMW9 has an effective mass of 9g, higher than the standard JMW9 and is compatible with lighter carts.I currently use a Shelter 90X with great results. It tracks like a dream. Even my torture tracks.
SACD King under $7500
I nominate Bel Canto PL-1, although not a dedicated SACD player. I have ben very pleased with it for about 2 years.
Shelter 901 with VPI JMW9 Signature
Artemus:Thanks for the advice. I'm hanging around A-Gon, and when the time is right I'll pull the triugger on a fine phono pre, just not yet. I'm still checking them out.The Blackbird is a great match, but mine had tracking problems on highly modu...
Shelter 901 with VPI JMW9 Signature
DavtI use the phono section in the MF A 308. Not too bad. But I do wonder how much I'd need to spend to get a real improvement in the phono stage...$2-3K? Is it overkill with my table and cartridge to go to, say, a Steelhead or Aesthetix Rhea?Does...
Stereo Tube Amps for JM Labs Electra 927 Be
I already have what I believe is a great integrated...the Musical Fidelity A308, and it has a nice phono stage I am enjoying every day. I just want to try the tbe sound with the analog front end. I am seriously considering the sixpacs. There are 2...
Are some tracks impossible to track?
Fair enough. I have reversed back to 2.2 g VTF.But the JMW 9 is not that good OK, I know its not a $2-3k ARM. Is that what it takes? I thought the JMW 9 was designed for the VPI tables. And it does track 99% of what I listen to fine, as far as I c...
What is distortion due to?
I want to thank everyone who responded to my question. The problem is solved. It was the anti-skate, or rather the lack of.I assumed I needed a counterclockwise rotation of the wire to provide the anti skate. WRONG! When I read the manual it said ...
What is distortion due to?
OK, I can verify that it is only the right channel that distorts. I checked and did not have a twist in the wire. I increased my VTF to 2.2g, using a digital guage placed on top of the platter. Still the buzz was there. I then put a single counter...
What is distortion due to?
I'll disconnect one channel at a time to see for sure if it is one channel only. Yes, it is the highly modulated passages, very loud and high frequency..like human voice (soprano), violin, or upper piano range. What is the best way to do the "twis...
What is distortion due to?
I have been tracking at 2.0 gr, which is what is recommended. It is a JMW 9, and the buzz is only on some records and is not just in one channel, so I doubt its anti skate. I'll try a little more tracking force.Could it be bad pressings?
Questions about SACD vs.analog for classical music
Robert Silverman, who recorded the Beethoven Sonatas using the Boesendorfer Reproducing piano for Stereophile, said that he is one of the few classical musicians who give a damn about recording technology.I think that the mid fi systems give enoug...
Questions about SACD vs.analog for classical music
I have a Scoutmaster/Sumiko Blackbird, playing into a Musical Fidelity a308 integrated with phono. I listen through JM Labs speakers, but also through a headphone rig consisting of Sony MDR-R10s amped by Earmax Pro Anniv Ed. My digital front end i...
great vinyl sound cost as much as great cd sound
I had about 300 or so lps sitting in boxes in my closet. I have a decent digital rig and more than 1000 cds and sacds, but not the emm labs (I do lust over those).I got a Scoutmasted here on Agon, along with a cart with "low hours" and in another ...
