REVIEW: Oppo DV980H
I didn't return the player because I didn't realize the problems I was having were hard-stops until after the return window had expired. A lot of what I went through was compatibility, and there were a series of firmware upgrades that were suppose...
REVIEW: Oppo DV980H
In my experience, a combo player will generally not make a personal DVD backup of a commercially produced VHS tape. I don't know how the VHS tapes are protected, exactly, but they are. There are methods of accomplishing this goal using a PC with a...
REVIEW: Oppo DV980H
Hey, DC-Step, good to hear from you! Usually we interact over on the S'Phile boards, no? Same person?I had no complaint with the Oppo that couldn't eventually have been worked around or gotten used to, except that it wouldn't consistently play per...
REVIEW: Oppo DV980H
Well, I liked New Coke better than I've liked having an archive of over 3000 personal backups that won't play in my DVD player.
Help troubleshooting McCormack separates?
Thanks, everybody. Sorry I lost my center there for a moment. There's no discernible pattern between daytime and evening, and there's no performance problem with the TV.The friend doesn't have a power regenerator so that's an idea. The electrician a...
Help troubleshooting McCormack separates?
Okay. Sorry this is so long. The problem I'm having is a very dry, reedy, over-emphasized upper midrange, on particular pieces it's discer0nible as trace amounts of electrical-sounding interference -- not unlike the audio equivalent of those little...

Okay, I'll take that as a green light to leave a long post about all of this. :-)I just won't do it right now because I'm going to bed. Audphile1, check back in about a day or so?
Help troubleshooting McCormack separates?
Well I've got a problem than I'm relatively confident can't be explained by speakers or room-response, most notably because it's intermittent.I've had this persistent difficulty in the behavior of my gear for some time, now, and it's bad enough th...
Possibly the best pre-amp one can have
So far I've received no reply. Maybe Charlie's too busy?I'd really like to look into this for a six-channel system, if Charlie's interested. I'd even be willing to go to Texas (Florida isn't that far, after all) to hear a specimen. But we can't sta...

Electrical buzzing sound, or else I'm imagining it
Unless I'm way off (tell me if I am), it would seem that this most recent experiment at least isolates the problem at the CD-player, no? 'Cause I can take it out of the stack and run a crappy b-unit for a few days while someone local checks it over.
Electrical buzzing sound, or else I'm imagining it
I didn't get to keep the new ones, as my friend's system needs their extra length, but I'm relatively confident that I can rule-out cables as a potential cause because the problem recurs with the same frequency regardless of which set of my own ca...
Electrical buzzing sound, or else I'm imagining it
Getting closer!I just tried this exact sequence, and it worked:1) I stopped the CD player but did not power off2) I shut the preamp and power amp off (preamp into "standby")3) I disconnected the speaker cables at the speakers4) I disconnected the ...
Electrical buzzing sound, or else I'm imagining it
UPDATE:Last night I went to a friend's house with all of my stuff. The friend's house is relatively new construction in a quiet suburb, far from urban multipaths and overhead wires, and his listening room is carpeted and plushly furnished and big....
whats a more detailed preamp
I don't think of the word "detail" when I think of Conrad-Johnson. Their stuff has always seemed more about suffusing the sound into a more seamless package, which often comes at the expense of detail, at least to me. BTW, I'm a total detail weird...
