Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I've been breaking in an Empire 888E retipped with an NOS .2x.7 mil nude elliptical stylus. Like 1080LT the 888E seems to want an extremely positive VTA. The forum achives on AA remark mainly on the impressive bass & midrange of this vintage E...
Best Tributes, Covers, Dedications
Marty, at least Sweet's eclecticism is in good taste, if sometimes a little tame.Another good one is "Blue Haze: Songs of Jimi Hendrix"(2000) with covers by Taj Mahal, Eric Burden, Buddy Miles, Vernon Reid, Michelle Shocked.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
A question to anyone with an Empire 999-type cartridge body. I have not yet found an NOS Empire 1/2" mounting clip, so I am going to fabricate an aluminum or hardwood 1/2" adaptor to be glued directly to the cartridge body. (In addition to solving...
Tweaks
Magfan, the whitepaper concerns electrotstriction and electrically-induced thermal expansion effects in monolithic silicon. In the experiment a tiny cantilever attached perpendicularly to a monolithic chip vibrated in various fundamentals and over...
Tweaks
"In all fairness to the 'other school of thought', some of the science associated with tweaks is a little .... weak? Solid State Microphonics?"Microphonic resonance in SS circuits (caused by fluctuating electrostatic forces in silicon chips and PC...
Mod my B C DAC 3, or just get another DAC?
The listed Underwood BC mods(Cree SiC diodes, OPA627 op amps, Connex silver IC, Riken resistors, Multicap PPFXS coupling caps) should together make a decisive improvement, but $1200 for around $150 in parts plus six hours work may be a bit rich.
Anyone Heard the New Soundsmith Sussurro Cartridge
At RMAF Sussurro was used on a Hanss TT with Lamm & The Lotus Group's Granada open-baffle Feastrex uber-speaker. Many variables at play, but this was among the best vinyl at the show.
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
Tbg, I see your point, but it doesn't explain how many exhibitors manage to obtain great sound from the get-go on Friday. If "big" room showcase exhibitors take several days to sort things out, then they are failing the majority of attendees. And ...
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
Lesson learned: instead of passing negative judgment on Friday, next time I need to arrive Sunday and leave Monday. Or perhaps vendors should arrive early and take more time for careful set-up.

Since in any case I need to find an NOS stylus for my 999XE/X, do you think the 2000 is the better of the two cartridges?
RMAF 2009 Analog Report + Meet and Greet
Lew, I did not hear as much outstanding vinyl as I would have liked at RMAF, but there was remarkably good sound on Bergmann and Hanss turntables.

On a prosaic note, does anybody know where to acquire the 1/2" mounting clip that works with an Empire 999 SE/X cartridge body? Thanks,Dave
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
To your point about fun, I much enjoyed the combo of Thiel 3.7, McIntosh 2301 monos, ARC Ref preamp, and PS Audio Perfect Wave stack. The synergy of this combo was an excellent compromise between full-bodied dynamics and neutrality & detail. I...
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
This was my first exposure to Audio Note--which IMO sounded surprisingly bland and lacking in depth and imaging. One of the best SET-oriented was the inexpensive Grant Fidelity room(Opera Consonance/Jungson/ShengYa/Shuguang.)
What were the best and worst rooms at RMAF 2009?
IMO GamuT had serious problems with muddy mid-bass. I don't get the buzz about Classic horns(w/Galibier and in several other rooms.)Cost-no-object best of show was close between Janszen(w/Bryston & Wadia), Dynaudio Consequence(w/Octave & W...
