Preamp combination question
If you like the Aesthetix, y9u might consider trading it in on a Janus. Or if you can stretch a bit, go for a Rhea? With the right tubes, the Rhea is very synergistic with the Calypso.
Eico HF-81 with Klipschorn
Have you done any tube rolling in your Eico? I put a pair of Mullard rectifiers in mine, and some NOS Amperex Holland EL84's and gained a tremendous dose of palpability compared to the modern production tubes that I had been using.Nice to hear it ...
Best $5,000 system for a small apt. in Stockholm
Just wanted to update this thread...I returned yesterday from Stockholm. I took the advice of several members on the board here and bought most of the system locally. My sister ended up with the following system:Sources: Musical Fidelity A5 CD pla...
New to tube rolling, where to purchase tubes?
Tube rolling is a slippery slope. There is NOT a direct relationship between price and sound quality/results. As a result, it's a good idea to play around at the cheap end of the spectrum first if you are truly experimenting.OTOH, if you find some...
Best $5,000 system for a small apt. in Stockholm
I wish I had the time (and money) to spend a week or two shopping high-end audio in Sweden!! I know my sister will not do it for herself. I figured I'd buy some stuff there, but wanted to take advantage of Audiogon to get some bargains on used equ...
Which music server to buy?
When building your own server, you need to take a few things into consideration. Specifically, power usage and backup. A lot of folks re-task an old PC for server duty, set it up with linux and stick it in a closet: this can work really well. But ...
Hearing Aids?
As others have said, the technology has really come a long way. Most of the mid-range and high-end hearing aids now use digital signal processing (DSP) to "shape" the response of the unit based on each individual's exact hearing. They also use a f...
MintLP/Dynavector 17D3 question
I just went through this last week, putting a new Dynavector on my Scoutmaster using the Mint LP tractor. As the previous posters have said, great lighting is really key to the necessary precision. I set it up using the hand-magnifier, then discove...
tube amp noise
If you gently tap on the faceplate do you get any noise? If your tubes are going microphonic, they'll definitely be noisy.Sometimes, however, this could be a sign that the tube sockets themselves have some slight corrosion. Removing and re-inserti...
Tubed Pre question?
It's a playground. I'm a tube guy, but right now I've got my speakers bi-amped with a 600wpc solid state amps on the bass speaker drivers and 100wpc tube amps on the tweeter/mid drivers. Gives me everything I want, bass drive/slam + purity of tone...
Turntable - On the Wall or to the Floor?
You can try shelf materials that will allow you to tailor your sound a bit.My TT is on a Target shelf, but I replaced the stock shelf with thick glass, and the TT is on a Ginkgo Cloud 11 platform. Before the Ginkgo, I'd used the original MDF shelf...
Scoutmaster Isolation
A third vote for the Ginkgo Cloud. I've got a Cloud 11 under mine, on a wall-mounted Target turntable shelf. Solved all my vibration issues!
Phone Preamp help for VPI Scout w Grado Sonota MM
I went through this too, with the same combination as you. I had trouble getting the Grado Sonata to sound very good with the VPI arm. Eventually I got a VPI head weight (from Musical Surroundings, I think) which gave me the best sound. The Grado ...
AC / DC - What are you using? Dissapointed by ....
How clean is your power? Have you ever looked at your power on an oscilloscope? When I was in the city, my power was crap, and a power conditioner made a huge positive difference. Now that I live in the shrubs, my power is pretty clean and reliabl...
Opinion on Nakamichi azimuth tape decks please
Dragons can be found pretty cheaply these days, but the electronics (as you suspected) can be a bit wonky. I have a Nak 680zx which does have azimuth adjustment, but it's set based on recording a tone on one head & checking with the read head,...
