Differences between Harbeth, Spendor, Graham, etc. ?
Hard to answer that. I only heard 2 Harbeths: one was the 40.2 (at an audio show in a fairly large room). I loved the sound of it, but you can’t fit that one. My 30.1s are being used in a nearfield audio situation, which absolutely shouldn’t work...
Differences between Harbeth, Spendor, Graham, etc. ?
Try the Harbeth 30.1s. Wonderful sounding large 2-ways. People rushed to the get the 30.2s, the the 30.2 XDs, but IMHO, the 30.1s are the keepers. Slightly warm & distinctly musical.
Help with high end bookshelf speakers
Whatever speakers you pursue, I recommend for a room that size that they be sealed/acoustic suspension. Speakers with that design interact less with one's (small) room, can be placed closer to the back wall if needed, and can be paired with a sub ...
A Better Way to Buy Gear - Help Needed
My advice is walk away. This seller is absolutely full of crap The "meta" factor here is that Paypal either has or has not yet implemented an IRS-mandated reporting mechanism to compel sellers who accept money via Paypal’s "Good and Services" fea...
little big win
Interesting story. It illustrates the mental power of preconceptions; also the power of sustained good will & persuasion to break through preconceptions. (using a speaker that doesn't sound like garbage)
Subwoofer for music only ?
The SVS SB1000 Pro would be the ticket, assuming it's sealed/acoustic suspension, like my SB1000. That's the type of sub you need in a 13' x 13' room (same dimensions as my home office).
Seeking Bookshelf Recommendations
In a small room you’ll get the best results/least room boundary interaction with a sealed/acoustic suspension speaker. They are few and far between, but well worth seeking out. I’ve had 4 or 5 pairs of sealed speakers in my small home office and g...
My new review for The Absolute Sound comparing AGD GAN amps with BHK300’s
On so many threads here, some audio hooligan shows up, bristling with self-appointed importance & "expertise," and proceeds to drag the thread into snark and recrimination. Always a bummer to encounter this stuff....
Buying Used Speakers
I have repeatedly purchased used speakers in my life. The biggest was the first: a pair of Vandersteen’s then-TOTL, the Model 4. I bought them from a west coast seller via an intermediary firm that handled the money (kind of a broker, ensuring the...
Could Class D really be that good?
My nearfield desktop audio system is very crowded and had no space for an A/B or A amp of any kind when I switched to passive monitors ~6 years ago. Thus I was pushed into the alien (to me) world of class D amps. I did a ton of research, looking i...
Example of a piece o’ crap, useless review
I subscribed to TAS, STEREOPHILE, and any other audio mags I could get starting >40 years ago. And of course, I've read a ton of 1/2-baked reviews in that time. Rather than trash this or that reviewer, I'd rather talk about one who is far abov...
New Class D amplifiers
One of the two amps I’m about to mention is hardly new. But I thought my experience might be of interest to to those whose primary interest in class D is musical realism & ear-friendly tonality, not just accuracy and detail. I have a rather c...
Dog pissed on speaker
I have no suggestions but just want to express my gratitude for the resonant thread title.
Paypal drastic changes
This entire thing annoys me to no end. I researched it pretty thoroughly, and it looks like I'll never pay tax unless I profit on the sale, which I never ever do. So there's that. My return is already complicated. But this won't complicate it fur...
Stuff You Tried To Love
(uhmm, I think it's "Bach Partitas") To get back to the regret-drenched topic of this thread: some years ago I went through a long period of researching passive volume controllers. I had been using a very nice sounding, transformer based PVC from...
