If NOS pre or power tubes became unavailable altogether, what new tubes would you buy?
@enginedr1960I I think the only thing Raul gets me thinking is that he's a poseur: His strong opinions are not backed by any experiences he cares to share. There is no "one-size-fits-all" perfect signal path out there, or we'd all have one and the...

@rauliruegas If you can't identify at least one piece of gear you believe is better than whatever other piece of gear (or better yet, the entire signal path) you've heard, as I have asked you for, then I suggest your opinion reflects the depth of ...

@lewm,Thanks for clarifying that not all 6SN7 *types* are identical. I was merely trying to assure him that he wouldn't be applying plate voltage to the grids or heaters. Electrical variations (as I mentioned) do vary from tube to tube. Of all the...

Dear @rauliruegasDisregarding our differences on tube v. s/s, and assuming no-one has built the "perfect" anything linking source to ear, I'd ask your opinion on what you regard as the closest to perfect you've heard, irregardless of price, and sa...

Hi tubed1,The Chinese CV-181s measure 4" from top to bottom, not counting pins, plus almost 2" diameter at the bulge, vs. 2-1/2" for a typical straight-sided 6SN7. Pin-outs are identical (as they are with mil-spec US and European VT-231s and Russi...

Everything distorts, from your gear to the room to the shape of your ear to the engineers and mics. I believe well-designed tube gear distorts best to my liking; with the close exception of a well cared-for S/S Bedini, it's preferable to SS distor...
How good is the Technics 1200 Mk2 with all the KAb upgrades?
Never had the pleasure of one of KAB's Technics tables, but if they're anything like the old Technics RS 15xxx series R2R tape decks they gotta be a work of art. The Jelco 750-series arm is head and shoulders above any $~1,000 Rega arm. For anyone...
Very Bad purchase from upscale audio Acoustic Zen Adagio
I third or fourth the endorsement of Andy Bowman at Vintage Tube Services. Been very satisfied with every purchase and consult with him: there is no greater nor knowledgeable tube junkie on the planet. One caution with Andy: don't bother with emai...
Are there any $1500 tube preamps that that can compare with Tubes4hifi's SP14?
Since Don Sachs won't brag himself up, I will. My SP-14 has gradually morphed (as time & funds have permitted) into a DS-1, and now we're getting ready to bring it up to his current line of DS-2s. Jupiter coupling caps, Dueland wire and film c...
Are there any $1500 tube preamps that that can compare with Tubes4hifi's SP14?
You might consider Tubes4HiFi's SP-13, which is a noval version of the SP-14, uses 6CG7 tubes. It didn't acquire the following that the -14 has and I believe is no longer advertised, but I have owned both and the -13's sound is every bit as good a...
KT88 tubes for Monos
I would second all positive comments about Jim McShane and the Gold Lion KT-88s. There are some dandy Chinese tubes (top-grade PSVanes & ShuGuangs) that may have a better sound but longevity remains an issue with Asian issues.
Vandersteen
Johnny R., hate to disappoint you, but I'm not on Tyler's payroll. Again, my only beef with the Vandies (other than price) is that at least in my listening room, you have a very limited "sweet spot," off-axis of which you're missing their true val...
Vandersteen
I owned Vandy 5ACs and have had 2CEs Sigs as well. Problem with Vandys is that the "sweet spot" is about a quarter-inch wide and they are hugely over-priced. For about one-third the price Tyler Acoustics gives a vastly broader sound-stage and equi...
Warm-up time for amps and preamps
I'm not a scotch drinker, but my tube system sounds better after a couple of beers. Seriously, I think both the amps and pre-amps are in their stride after a half hour's running from a cold start. Leaving the pre-amps on 24/7 is just a waste of el...
Is it a OK to leave tube pre-amps powede up 24/7
There are only so many electrons in a vacuum tube. The longer you burn the tubes, the shorter their lives are going to be. You can expect to wring about 10k hours from pre-amp and driver tubes, and about 3k hours from power tubes. An important iss...
