Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Most recently I've set up my Empire 1000 ZE/X for use with my Magnepan Unitrac arm, which in turn I've used on a couple of vintage 'tables--a Russco Mk V belt/idler hybrid and a Thorens TD 150 Mk II. I tend to track it at 1 gram, VTA very slightly...
A good cartridge match for Thorens 150 mkII?
I've used a number of cartridges on my TD150 with the TP13A arm, and I've had the most success with low- to medium-high compliance cartridges (20x10-6cm/Dyne or less, roughly). It's a light arm so counterintuitive to use a DL103 with it, but the c...
Using an Empire 1000 ZE/X
Sure, now that I've looked at the owners manual the widget is called an "auxilliary mounting bracket" and you can see a drawing of it on the last page of the owners manual (you can download the manual from Vinyl Engine). It also says "under certai...
Using an Empire 1000 ZE/X
I also admire the 1000ZE/X, having used it on more modest arms--a Jelco, and a mildly modified Thorens TP13A. The things that struck me first about its performance were its speedy bass, macro-dynamics, and neutral/beautiful midrange tone. A terrif...

Thank you Raul for starting this thread and sharing your experiences and expertise. I started researching it, and your "discoveries..." thread a number of months ago after spending 18 wonderful months with a SS rebuilt DL103. I'm currently enjoyin...
speakers/turntable for Marantz 2325
*Would a phono pre-amp running through the built in Marantz phono pre-amp cancel out the impact of a good, dedicated phono pre-amp?*If you want to use a MC cartridge you could certainly run a step up transformer into the built-in phono section of ...

Who LOVES their under $ 1000 table combination ?
I've found happiness with refurbished and slightly modded vintage. My Thorens TD150 MkII was free a few yeas back. Cleaned it up and applied several coats of oil-varnish mixture, put it on a walnut sub-plinth (I had this stuff on hand). Adding the...
wright sound company, step up wmt100
Mark, I have a 1:10 Wright SUT that I additionally add resistors via Y connectors, bringing the "stock" load of 100 to 40 ohms instead (to more closely match the DL103 impedance). I also use a 1:36 SUT built from Cinemag transformers (by a friend)...
wright sound company, step up wmt100
Hey Mark.In my experience tube rush will be minimal (if any at all) if you keep the gain pots on the unit lower than 9:00. But unless you've got gain to burn in your amp, having the pots this low probably won't provide you with much output using a...
wright sound company, step up wmt100
I have it and enjoy it immensely, with the Wright WPP100 and a Sound-Smith rebuilt Denon DL103. For me the sound benefits substantially when matching the SUT load to the cartridge, by adding resistors via Y connectors on the input of the SUT.Jim
$75 Thorens vs. $2K+ Michell...is this possible?
+++I've thought about swapping the cartridges to compare, but I'm not that confident in being able to set them up properly.+++I'd say read the FAQs at Vinyl Asylum, download a good protractor from Vinyl Engine, and go at it slowly and carefully. T...
$75 Thorens vs. $2K+ Michell...is this possible?
I normally lurk here but can't help myself from posting on this one. I would imagine that a head to head comparison might be fun and even illuminating, so long as the same cartridge and vinyl are used for both. If it were me I'd be willing to buy ...

Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
Thought I'd drop by.My Jelco arm (think MMT, Audioquest, Graham Robin)doesn't have the capability of pressure-fitted weights like the Rega. But on each side of the bearing housing I thought there might be room on the sides for something, small fla...
