You are describing a typical result of "upgradeitis". You had a product you were very happy with, so assumed that moving up?? the line, spending more money, would get you more happiness. It VERY often does not. I have a pair of HP3's myself, and p...
Mcintosh MC252 vs. MC402
I had a 402 which I sold to buy an ARC Ref 110. I knew I really liked the 402, but thought the new Ref 110 would take my mind off it. But I really missed it a lot, as it is the best sounding solid state amp I have heard, including many of the rece...
Audio Research amp's retubing experiences
I retubed a VT200 with SED 6550's from a well known Canadian tube seller. One of the tubes shorted upon turn-on and this blew out a resistor and a few inches of circuit trace. My savings cost me $500 in shipping and repair (The 200 must go common ...
Pass X-250.5 or McIntosh MC402?
Interesting that you seem to be just generally dissatisfied for some unknown reason, just a lack of pleasure. I tried a lot of ss amps looking for the pleasure I found from my tube amps without the heat. None came close, including the x250, until ...
Need your opinion..Ayre 5vex and the McIntosh 352
I did have a V5ex, and sold it after a few days. Like most solid state amps, it sounded like a solid state amp. It was fine, just not great to me. I owned a few others before getting an MC402, which I REALLY like a lot. I was looking for an SS amp...

dave_b, why am I not surpised by you not understanding why people keep playing those "flawed" and "mediocre" LP's. After all, you have a Krell SACD player. Thanks, you keep me laughing!
McIntosh - is it that great?
The Ref 3 mates with any amp well. It has a very low output impedance. I cannot speak more highly of the Ref3. Supremely versatile and great sound. Sounds great balanced or single-ended. I have no desire to audition any more preamps or power amps....
McIntosh - is it that great?
RWD, I like the 402 because it just does not sound like either a SS amp or a tube amp. I liked tube amps because they sounded the most like what I heard in real life, but the 402 is even better in that regard, plus it is more detailed and supremel...
McIntosh - is it that great?
When I owned my VT100 mk3, which replaced a much loved 4 year affair with a Mk2, I brought home an MC275 for a couple of nights, and did not feel it was better than the ARC. When I brought home the MC402, I could not sell both my VT100 mk3 and my ...

Davemitchell, the results do not support your conclusions. The results are incredible clarity. Transformers are mixed blessings, of course, but the results speak for themselves. The dual differential truly balanced circuit is also fairly unique, a...
Vintage vs. new McIntosh amps long
I found the 402 to be the most "real" sounding amp. I have been the SET route with 5 different amps, PP tube route, and both were closer to real than any solid state I could find. But the 402 just sounds more realistic than any of them. And 400 wp...

09-10-07: Dave_bNothing innovative about Mac gear, nor is it tremendously musical. In fact it sounds like very goo old class B electronics..not particularly exceptional in any area, nor a total disaster in any either..just OK!Absolutely NOT the ca...

I have been on a long search for a solid state amp I could live with, and bought (used) ML 27.5, Ayre V5xe, Pass x-250, Nuforce, and other top contenders to replace my ARC VT-200 and VT 100 mk3 in the summer months. None of the solid state amps co...
Problem with Audio Research Ref 3 or Ref 210's
I have noticed that the Ref 3 has such great dynamics that volume seems to change (increase) when transitioning from a mellow piece to one with more dynamics. It is just explosive. Are you sure that is not what you are experiencing?
Not Another NuForce thread......
"NuForce bested my ARC VT100MKII hands down. An immediate knockout"That was certainly not my experience. I had the 8.02's, and a VT100 mk2 at the time. I found the Nuforces boring, and sterile compared to the ARC. They were initially impressive so...
