Any comments on the deHavilland UltraVerve preamp?
Yeah, I can recommend it whole-heartedly. A great pre! Smooth, easy on the ears, dead quiet, responds well to tube rolling. It isn't overly lush, but quite detailed with a somewhat warm presentation, depending on what tube you are running, and you...
Amp recommendation: Cary SS vs. McCormack vs. Ayre
I have an upgraded DNA-125 (Gold) that is absolutely stellar for the price of the amp used plus upgrade. I haven't heard anything that beats it at that price. Very musical, detailed, big soundstage, powerful, can listen for hours. I did have troub...
Bat vk31se and vk120 vs Simaudio I-7
Great! Also try tuning your room, if you haven't already. In my room, that was by far the biggest bang for the $. I listened to a system that retailed at $40,000 today at a dealer (Dynaduio C-2 speakers), and it couldn't hold my system's jock stra...
Bat vk31se and vk120 vs Simaudio I-7
I have put the Karan I-180 (the newest version) into my system, running it against the ARC LS26 and SD135 combo on loan from a dealer, as well as my McCormack DNA-125 Gold and Dehavilland preamp combo. I picked it up for a demo based solely on rec...
Review: Herron M1 Monaural Amplifier
No, I haven't heard the older M-150, but supposedly isn't isn't a whole lot different than the new M1, but without the quick-start feature. My friend, who ended up with these after my demo period of 3 weeks, says it is absolutely better than his P...
Modded CD Player or Stock CD Player?
I purchased a use Sony SACD 9000es with Vacuum State Level 4 upgrades, and had them bring it up to Level 6 for a minimal charge. All told, including the used purchase price ($400) and the price paid for the mods ($1800), probably around $2200 has ...
Bat vk31se and vk120 vs Simaudio I-7
Unfortunately, I won't be able to draw comparisons to your BAT separates, but will borrow my friend's ARC separates as well for a head-to-head in my system.
Bat vk31se and vk120 vs Simaudio I-7
Supposedly the Karan is heavily biased into Class A. Having seen one, it has a huge power supply, and I mean huge, for an amp of this size. My DNA-125 has probably only 1/3 of the available current with the stock transformer.I have one of the Kara...
Bat vk31se and vk120 vs Simaudio I-7
If you like the I-7, you may want to give a Karan I-180 a listen. I bet you would be impressed....
Integrated $500-1K for Classic Jazz
YBA 201 or Integre DT would be good choices, and my pick if I were limited to a $1000 budget.
The Most Musical Class A/B Power Amplifier??
An upgraded to Platinum status McCormack DNA-125 will be pretty darn good. Only rated at 125wpc, but with that Piltron transformer, tons of current and could drive the Maggies very well. Mine is the same w/o the Piltron, and boy does it sound good...
Tyler Decade D2s: review
Lubes3: Dimensions are on Audiogon in the sale section: search "tyler". The D1 is a pretty big speaker: around 65 inches if I remember right. Ty definitely puts out a good product. I heard an Aerial Acoustics 7B yesterday, and no contest vs. my Li...
Subwoofer meshes well with 2-channel?
Wow, that got pretty technical for my limited knowledge of subwoofers and sound waves! So, the gist of what was being said is that there is no dis-advantage to going with a 2 way speaker (or a 2.5 or 3 way, but not something with a huge MTM design)...
Review: McCormack DNA-125 Amplifier
Hi,Sorry, I have never heard the stock DNA .5. There are several people who have that: I think it is a little warmer, the 125 a little more detailed. Most people would say that the 125 rev. Gold is more dynamic than the older DNA Rev.A stuff. The ...
Modded SACD player: SACD or Redbook sound best?"
Thanks for the responses. For the multi-channel SACD: does one have to have more speakers than a standard 2-channels setup to listen or to get the benefits? Or, does "multi-channel" have something to do with the mixing and recording? It sounds lik...
