Try a pass labs x-1 or x-2 preamp, tube-like w/o tubes. Then upgrade to a pass labs x-150 or 250.

Can CD Players be altered to play CD-Rs
I agree w/Avideo. I have an old Denon CD changer in my system that plays CD-R's. I copied Jazz at the pawnshop CD on my computer's cd burner. When I A B them the copy sounds terrible.
The best speaker you ever heard?
Thiel 7's. Hauntingly Accurate Soundstage.
Exchange Krell KAV-250a for a Pass Labs X-350?
I have listed to both x-350's and Krell's. I bought an x-150 and an pass labs x-1 pre-amp. I like the match between the x-1 and x150 the best. The preamp makes a larger difference than an amp. I also own Harm Tech cables. Try the Pro Silway II's a...

Theta Miles VS Resolution Audio CD50
I have auditioned the Miles, it does not throw as deep of soundstage as their dac's do. The Miles is certainly not warm. I've had great warm - musical results through my pass labs x-1. Two other options,Mark Levinson 39 – original version very mus...
Has anyone heard the new Wadia 301 yet?
Not yet, and I'm very interested in this piece.
Theta DS Pro Gen V or newer?
When will the Gen 6 be released? if you look at stereophile recommended components the Gen 6 has been a "K" for upcoming for many yrs. I love Theta's Pro Basic III. The sound stage is frightening (like my Thiel's)
What music is best for an Audiophile Society Meeting?
Jazz at the Pawnshop. Haunting well recorded.
Audio Cost Allocations
The most important component in your system is your speakers. Find what like and them build your system around it. Next is your preamp, and then your source equipment. Tube or not to tube? That is question.
