KEF LS50 vs Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MkII vs Thiel 1.6
Thanks soix.  I did try the 1.6s with a couple 100w amps but they were not as resolving as the B60.  OTOH, they were older and probably mid-fi types (Adcom). While I'll probably go listen to the Dynaudios (they're local and used), sounds like I'd ...
KEF LS50 vs Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MkII vs Thiel 1.6
soix & schubertThanks for the quick responses!soixYes, I currently own the 1.6s after owning 1.5s.  The passive preamp was one of those "itches" that I needed to scratch.  Much to my surprise, it is way more to my liking than the internal one ...
Best female vocal recording on CD?
Siris Svale - Blackbird (Norwegian jazz singer with a beautifully twisted sense of songs - excellent recording and great music)Mariza - Fado (originally from Mozambique of African & Portuguese ancestry, she's brought the ancient sound of Fado ...
Turntable Advice
While TTs are back in vogue, you still see lots of them kickin around the used market. If you enjoy 'tinkering', pick one of the older high popularity / high availability / highly mod-able ones and go exploring the after market mods. Great fun and...
Truly weird Rega transport issue.
Just to put closure on this...longer cable was the answer. I tried everything from 1' to 20'. Everything below 8' would not be seen by the DAC, irrespective of quality. In fact, an ancient very thin RadioShack 20'er seems to work as well as my nic...
Truly weird Rega transport issue.
Al, several people suggested using longer cables but you're the first one who's explained why. Than you! I'll try both suggestions ASAP.
Preamp to Amp jumpers on Bryston Integrated
Al - Wow, thank you for the thoughtful recommendation. Turns out, quite independently, I had already ordered a 1 foot LC-1. Just recently tried them out and found them no more colored than my Zu Julians (now sold). The sub, an SVS SB-1000, does ha...
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
Mesch, thanks for all your help. The Jolida was supposed to arrive today but the weather here in NH is . . . well, the weather. Spent the day cleaning records. Excited I am.
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
Ptss - I did replace my older MITs with inexpensive Blue Jeans cables which made for a much easier routing scheme...but there wasn't much difference in the sound. As I've mentioned before the MITs are a real pain in my set up. My Tonearm was rewir...
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
Mesch - I upgraded my Thiel 1.5s (which I loved) to 1.6s. frankly, I was shocked at the richer sound. Didn't anticipate it to be so distinct. I have some high freq hearing loss so the border line brightness that Thiels have is, for me, just right....
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
Ws_trader - Currently my only tube unit is the Bottlehead pre. While I have a variety of tubes for it, my A/B comparisons (versus the SS Bryston) have not been very impressive. I do have a tube phono preamp on order and just upgraded my speakers s...
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
There seems to be a growing consensus about the opportunity I have in my analog setup and I agree. I did a quick comparison this afternoon using an identical CD & vinyl of an recording I know well and was surprised to discover the CD sounded b...
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
A couple of you have asked about my current amp (Bryston B60) or suggested something more powerful would be worth pursuing. I had, for a while, their bigger amp (3b) using it with several well regarded preamps. It never really floated my boat as i...
So what would you recommend for my next upgrade?
Jperry - well "bigger steps" is an understatement. Hold on a minute while I catch my breath...:8) Not to be timid (I suddenly am) but TT + arm + cart + phono pre are probably well past my courage level not to mention my near term investment limit....
Resolution Audio CD55
Gotta say, I know this is a 14 year old thread but since Gary died not all that long ago, I wanted to leave a positive in his memory. I lived in Lake Oswego for a decade, went into his shop regularly, bought minor stuff (too many kids to really bu...
