Question for Ayre EX-8 owners
Thanks for the quick & smart responses, everybody! I can’t believe that this simple resolution didn’t occur to me! Duh! I love this forum. I just saved $1000.
Sound Stage and Imaging
Lower-end Magneplanars. But when it comes to soundstage, cables, room acoustics, & power conditioning are essentail.  You're talking about very tiny phase & amplitude
Nowhere to hear speakers and amps anymore!
@soix: Sigh. To be clear, I’m not complaining (at least I wasn't intending to), just summarizing the current situation, which I’m sure I share with many others. If you have a solution, let’s hear it. As for me, I’ve, um, adapted. I simply researc...
Nowhere to hear speakers and amps anymore!
It’s a problem. For example, there are no high-end dealers with showrooms in my entire state, except for a sound-reinforcement company that has a small room with a few McIntosh components.  And unfortunately, traveling out of state is not an optio...
10 Wonderful things and 10 bad things about the audiophile world.
I think this whole thread is a bit silly, but hey, it sucked me in, so whadoeyeno? Regardless, I have two peripherally related comments: i) The more one understands about psychoascoustics -- about how the brain perceives audio -- the more obviou...
BEST little know Jazz Album that you ever heard?
simonmoon: Nice to find another RiO fan -- we’re few & far between. But I have to disagree on one issue: the RiO bands span a huge breadth of styles -- and so does the term "jazz." If Cecil Taylor’s atonal piano improvisations are jazz, i...
Is there a way to switch one set of speakers between two sound systems?
alaskaman: Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I solved my problem the hard way.  I've ordered an Ayre EX-8 integrated that includes all the functionality I'd need to switch between its internal amp and an alternate signal path. And that's jus...
BEST little know Jazz Album that you ever heard?
The threshold issue here is: "What do you mean by 'jazz' "?  Ellington, Mahavishnu, Wynton, Alice Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, Sun Ra, Sinatra?  And are you including boots? But here's my two bits: In the 1970s & 1980s, I collected a lot of mind-...
What was the first power cable that you noticed a difference in the sound?
curiousjm: This one's easy, and I think many of the posters have implied the same thing.  If you replace a component with an ostensibly better component, but don't hear a difference, there's one obvious conclusion: The component you replaced wasn...
New DAC with streamer
markmuse, I've been tossing around the idea of either a DSD MK1 or MK2.  I expect the asking price for the older model to drop considerably, esp. after the positive MK2 review in TAS.  In your experience, is there a  significant difference in soni...
Electronics for Harbeths -- $5-10K
honey0ooi: Thanks for the suggestions, but options like that are not available in my area. Anyway, at this point, I think I’ve already found an outstanding solution in the Ayre, which seems to be a near-perfect fit. Charlie Hansen’s clever "diamo...
Electronics for Harbeths -- $5-10K
kennyc: I understand & thanks for the follow-up.  Everything I've heard assures me that the Hegel would be a fine choice.  The Ayre seemed to be an even better fit, and I think I"m committed to the EX-8 at this point, but I'm sure I would have...
10 gauge power cord. Too much power for tube amp?
erik_squires: slightly off-topic. Do you know of any similar devices that can display noise levels, relative to a 120V/60Hz signal? Boy, that would be useful, especially if it let you specify frequency range.
Sub Wiring
Only caveat is if you're using an Audio Research tube amp.  ARC has its own, slightly different, recommended configuration for driving full-range speakers & a sub from the same outputs.
Nice vintage $2k Turntable, cartridge, and phono stage
Have you read the Recommended Components lists published by Stereophile & The Absolute Sound? Lots of ideas there, all vetted by people who compare such gear all the time. Another source is anything that Michael Fremer has published, such as ...
