Weakest digital link: DAC - Streamer - Server?
@invalid  If that is the case, then you likely have a speaker/room issue.
What are you using as a streamer? Constructive feedback please.
@danager, In a perfect world yes but in reality that’s not true. The voltages that are represented by ones and zeros have residual values that distorts the signal.   And what effect exactly does that have? How much distortion? Does that effect...

Too bad no amplifier is a straight wire with gain. No, the speaker tends to interfere with that, but many come very close. I encourage you to take some amplifiers that identified as such and see if you can tell them apart without looking.
Is a USB stick directly into ones streamer (renderer) better than streaming from a PC/NAS?
And that is quite logical if you consider that a network cable is included in a digital chain. A chain that relies on clean energy to keep everything clocked tight. A chain that works with noise-levels of -140dB. A chain where small deviations ar...
Do I need a subwoofer?
the QLN Prestige 5s are down 3dB at 26 Hz at 1 meter which means in a normal sized room at 3 meters they are down somewhere around 10 dB. You still need subwoofers if you want to try duplicating a live performance.   That is not how it works....

When I look at the value of my time then streaming services and Roon are pretty easy to justify. I think many of us have more money than time these days unless you're retired. Then there is the whole aspect of the user interface. I can't remember ...
Do I need a subwoofer?
@olfac87 , Do you know exactly what series it is? It should be on the back. The series 80, the first ones, didn't go that deep on the bass, they were 2db down at 37Hz (quick check) and by 20Hz would have dropped a lot. Subs would definitely hel...
Weakest digital link: DAC - Streamer - Server?
A lot of people use amplifiers, tube, many low feedback designs, etc. to alter the tone of their system. Those will definitely sound different from amplifiers designed to be a straight wire with gain. Some speaker cables may be tone controls. I gu...

Jitter being below audible thresholds?  I guess timing then just doesn’t matter.  Today, for most digital USB in audio, i.e. USB and Ethernet, no, timing does not matter, not even a little. For SPDIF, most modern DAC chips and SPDIF receivers w...
Review: Holo May (L2) DAC and the Musetec Audio (LKS Audio) MH-DA005 DAC Compaired
@dbb  I don't understand you comment on "volume drop". Right now I don't either. I may have confused two threads. I though you had mentioned 1 had some reduced volume when connected to the Zen stream, but I may have misread, confused the threa...
Choke power supply- part 2
The schematics above are 6 types of ways to do choke regulation. The big inductor after the bridge has wicked overshoot but eventually settles. Normally you put an element across the inductor. Note all the voltages are less than the capacitor a...
Choke power supply- part 2
@oldears , you not understanding my responses does not make them inane. What I said was: Whether you put the choke on the input or the output the effect is the same. A transformer reflects the impedance from one side to the other based on the t...
Choke power supply- part 2
The question was why are there not more amps with choke regulated supplies. Not whether you can make one work. I certainly did not question whether you could. I said there is little practical reason for doing it (beyond what I stated) and many pra...
Headphones to keep you honest
@cindyment , "Headphones are rarely ever flat. Not even close." I've sometimes wondered why this was. Is there some kind of anomaly in the space/time continuum that prevents a truly flat pair from ever being built?  Even after a century? Not ev...
When choosing new Speakers, what matters most to you?
Except any decent speaker review would include a range of measurements both on axis and off axis, and if they have good equipment can give you an idea of total energy (estimated room curve). It is not perfect, but if you learn how to read those gr...
