The Good Stuff
@reubent  I just got the LP recently. It was in a batch of ex-college radio station LPs I picked up at Plaid Room Records, Loveland (Cincinnati), Ohio. Really happy to have it on original radio station demo vinyl. I tend to overlook the politics ...
The Good Stuff
@reubent  Thanks for posting. It brought back pleasant memories of me having a brand new copy of that LP way back in the mid 1980s. Some of the politics might not have dated well, but it's still my favourite Billy Bragg LP after all these years...
Can you vote on this song, 1 being brilliant, 5 being crap
I preferred the quieter more poignant opening and middle sections as I'm not sure if it needed to keep building up to a big sweeping crescendo. There was also a hook in there but not an especially catchy one. As there was still enough going on t...
Has this happened to you? How can it be stopped?
Have you felt the urge to buy a vintage piece of audio gear when you really didn’t need it?   I bought an AR XB1 turntable because I wanted something to play my records on. After seeing a couple of YouTube videos I fell in love with the elegant ...
A perfect song? What are your choices?
Whether this 80s hit can be considered pop perfection is a matter of opinion, but according to some of the comments posted below it, this seems to have helped some people climb out of the black hole of depression. Surely that alone is enough to m...
Ever Damage A Stylus Using Cleaning Brush?
@prof  I'll be listening to an album and then the sound will start getting very fuzzy, finally shrinking in to totally distorted. If I lift up the cartridge and place it down again in another spot the distortion is gone.   The mystery deepens,...
Ever Damage A Stylus Using Cleaning Brush?
@mulveling It’s because any forces the stylus / cantilever / suspension assembly is subjected to during proper cleaning are equal to or LESS than the forces it will be subjected to during normal playback.   That’s the first thing I thought of....
Why Music Has Lost it’s Charms (Article)
@mahgister Everybody know who Biden is....More despicable than the clown Trump, who at least never encourage war... I am sorry for us and for America....     Even Biden’s most ardent admirers must be having a few second thoughts by now, sure...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
@larsman  Thanks for that. It's Mike's funeral this Wednesday. No one is truly alone when it comes to bereavement, but it is mostly a solitary experience. I hope you found a way through it.   Anyway I did try piano myself for a while but my mu...
Why Music Has Lost it’s Charms (Article)
@mahgister  "Stanley Kubrick will not be possible today, he will not be free to do his own art...He will be a slave to a movie business...He will kill himself because he was so talented... Who kill Orson Welles genius? Corporate powers...Nowadays...
Best Sound Track Ever Vote for One
It’s difficult to split between Oliver! (1968) and West Side Story (1961). Bart v Bernstein and Sondheim.   I’ll go for Oliver! Lionel Bart was a natural musical genius if ever there was one.
Billie or Ella? Maria or Renata? Technique or feeling?
Both are great but Callas was a better actress. Given her life story, she had to be. There's a great line in the comments section by Larry Mitchell, "Tebaldi songs with a gorgeous voice.  Callas speaks to the gods."
Billie or Ella? Maria or Renata? Technique or feeling?
Feeling, every time for me, though I must confess that Billie Holiday gives me a headache every time. An appalling voice, down there with Adele! Maybe that’s the problem with feelings, they’re usually just so subjective. Whereas with technique...
Why Music Has Lost it’s Charms (Article)
@tylermunns  The wonderful documentary, “Heart’s of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse” features recorded conversations of Francis Ford Coppola with his wife, Eleanor.  These conversations feature Mr. Coppola expressing enormous anxiety about whe...
The Audio Critic
@agisthos  You may be right or you may be wrong. However when such respected figures as Peter Walker, Siegfried Linkwitz, Peter Aczel, Alan Shaw and many others all allude to the same opinion regarding amplification, then perhaps we ought to res...
