Stylus-Drag..Fact or Fiction?
@atmasphere, nothing new under the sun, eh? Thanks.@rodman99999, good for you! I think the main point to bear in mind is that, as stated in the Moncrieff article, is that it’s not just pitch errors that are affected by speed irregularities - "In t...
Stylus-Drag..Fact or Fiction?
@jtimothya , thanks for those links. Definitely essential reading for anyone serious about vinyl.Love the clarity of Moncrieff piece in particular. As for the out of this world Monaco 2 speed stats, it's good to know that Technics don't have it al...
Stylus-Drag..Fact or Fiction?
The belt v direct drive battle has swung to and fro over many decades but is the tide finally about to turn for good in the favour of the latter? Should anyone in 2019 really leave the vital matter of turntable speed control precision depending up...
How would you upgrade my entry level system?
It would be interesting to hear what decision you made and how you feel about it now. If you’re still weighing up your options I’d say spend the whole amount on new loudspeakers, full bandwidth designs flat down to at least 40Hz if you have the bo...
What does the term "Speed" mean in a speaker?
In my experience 'faster sounding' loudspeakers do tend to sound lighter in bass compared to slower designs. They simply don't bother getting involved in the arduous and problematic task of reaching down to seriously low frequencies.Nothing gives ...
Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
Once again the dreaded bloated bass boost....Other versions sound more natural...If you can get hold of the BT version you would probably keep this GM version as occasional digital alternative.
Your reference for "the absolute" sound?
@whatjd , “When I worked in an audio business and the goal was accurate sound, but I realized that for many consumers their basis for what they wanted their system to sound like was a jukebox. It seems that times may have not changed much since ...
Do we really need anything greater than 24/96? Opinions?
Yes, it’s simply a scam (or ongoing business model if you prefer). I have decades of experience to prove it.If the recording industry cared, really cared about sound quality, they’d make sure it was recorded and mastered properly right off the bat...
Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
@alexberger, yes the 2009 CD remasters left an awful lot to be desired. The stereos were just wrong. The tweaked versions in the 2014 US box might be the best the Fab 4 sound on CD. One day someone will finally capture the analogue magic and get th...
The best place to listen to music??
Those Tannoy Dual Concentrics are the stuff of legend. Can't identify the model but something so right about vintage Tannoys - flawed but timeless classics.
Best speakers 5k 10 k
@avanti1960, “How Stereophile called these Class B is mystifying.”Probably the lack of drama and scale compared to horns for example, which seemed to really bother their reviewer. In any case, all reviews are far far from the last word. I now laugh...
Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
I'm playing the CD extra tracks first before moving on to the remix. Nothing special on disc 2 but I've yet to hear disc 3.My biggest gripe with the GM remixes is that whilst it's absolutely brilliant to get back to the freshness of the original s...
Can quality sound be had using the short axis in a medium sized room (12X15) ??
I've heard JBL 100s sound wonderfully open and precise positioned right up to the rear wall. Same for tall Kef floorstanders with about a foot behind them. I recently heard some Monopulses and Kerr Acoustics sound great with not much space behind ...
Open Baffle vs Box
If you have the space (ie they can be very large) and you don't mind the looks (look ma, no box!) then open baffles are certainly worth a try for the sheer life-like freedom in sound that they offer. Much like open backed v closed back headphones....
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
@bander , jeez that's an unrelentingly bleak lyric. All the important relationships in life going south.."Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard"
