Switch to silver for a treble boost?
B&W DM602's (large standmounts). The bottom line is that for my system I know these speakers are ok, but thanks to years of playing in bands my upper frequency hearing isn't what it used to be. The Grado h'phones are on the bright side, which ...
Switch to silver for a treble boost?
My system isn't resolving enough to warrant an upmarket PC (and I'm a bit of a fence-sitter there too).I'm quite happy with the sound of my CD player and amp via a pair of Grado h'phones; it's via the speakers that the system seems to lack treble ...
about to jump into the power cord foray
Thanks gents, some very eloquent and thoughtful posts. Perhaps where I sometimes miss the point is by looking at my system as a collection of separate bits linked in a chain, when I need to consider the thing as a whole.I suppose in some ways chan...

Douglas, my next question to you (and others with highly resolving systems) would be: is all the time and cash worth it, given the questionable quality of many modern CD's?Even with my basic system, many CD's sound superb. Yet I've found an increa...

Douglas, I'll try to answer a few of your points. You're obviously a very intelligent man going by your thought out responses, but I have to take up a couple of issues.1. You ask about my system; well it's what I'd describe as budget - Cambridge c...

"SKEPTICS HAVE INCREDIBLE FAITH IN THEIR DOUBT". Actually, skeptics have no use for the word "faith"; true skeptics simply say that they wont blindly believe anything without some type of unbiased and controlled test or demonstration, which doesn'...
The best CD Player for the money
"I don't know where the name redbook came from..."It was as simple as the color of the cover on the technical paper published by Philips when they specified what a standard audio CD was.
Spades or bananas connectors?
Bare wire... why introduce yet another physical contact (barrier?) in the audio chain?
Tone controls- to use or not?
Thanks for the replies. I guess as we age we have to make the best of what hearing we have left! For me the tone controls are a double-egded sword. If I add a little treble, the top-end opens up nicely, but when I use the tone bypass switch, the ov...
Directional interconnect cables
Showing my ignorance here, but if analog audio signals are AC, how is there any directionality at all apart from shielding ground?

Blindjim, while you make some very good points, I think you and Musicnoise are talking about different things. You're 100% right when you talk about personal, subjective things like attraction, favorite foods, movies - even your favorite song or m...

In an attempt to bring a bit of balance...From a sheer science point of view, Musicnoise is quite right; the science (electronic theory) behind audio electronics is well defined and documented; if it wasn't, no audio gear would work, and designers...
Older Cd Players vs. new ones
When I replaced a 20 year old JVC CD player (still worked, made in Japan c1988, $300) with a Cambridge 640c (made in China 2008, $750), the improvement was not overwhelming. The CA was definitely better in every way, but not the leap I expected.I ...
Directional interconnect cables
Lupinthe3rd, I think the bottom line is to check the instructions that came with the cable or check with the manufacturer. It's quite possible different brands will have the arrows pointing in opposite directions.
Directional interconnect cables
This has been discussed in previous threads. Cheaper cables use the shield as a conductor, whereas better cables use two internal conductors (+ and -) with a separate shield. In directional cables this shield is only connected (earthed) at one end...
